New York, N.Y. – Despite junior
Heather Jenney scoring two goals, the Towson University field hockey team (2-9) fell to Columbia (7-4) by a score of 5-3 on Friday afternoon. Freshman
Emilee Woodall made nine saves for the Tigers.
Towson took the lead early in the game as Jenney scored on a pass from sophomore
Sam Zelenack in the game's fourth minute.
Columbia's
Christina Freibott scored in the 15
th minute with the assist from
Zoe Blake and
Meredith Kalberer to tie the game at 1 apiece.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead before halftime on a goal from
Whitney Hartstone in the 32nd minute.
Columbia outshot the Tigers 16-1 in the first half as Woodall recorded six first-half saves.
The Lions added a goal from
Katie Ruesterholz in the 38th minute, giving Columbia a 3-1 lead early in the second half.
Towson narrowed the score just two minutes later as Jenney recorded her second goal of the game on a pass from freshman
Meg Stuart.
Columbia's Ruesterholz scored her second goal of the game in the 42nd minute, regaining the Lions two goal lead.
The Tigers brought the score back within one in the 49th minute as
Kelly Mattingly scored an unassisted goal.
Towson recorded two defensive saves late in the game to keep the score close. Sophomore
Morgan Skavdahl made a defensive save in the 54th minute while Jenney recorded one in the 55th minute.
The Lions' Hartstone scored unassisted in the 66th minute to earn Columbia their seventh win of the season.
Columbia outshot the Towson 14-3 in the second half, finishing the game with a 30-4 advantage.
Woodall made three second-half saves for the Tigers for a total of nine saves in the game.
Kimberly Pianucci made one save to earn the win for the Lions.
Towson returns to action on Sunday, October 12th at 1 p.m. as they host Delaware.
