Williams Powers Tigers Over William & Mary, 3-0

TOWSON, Md. – Senior opposite Victoria Williams had 15 kills and hit .609 to power the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-0 win over William & Mary in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Saturday night in SECU Arena. The Tigers (17-3, 4-2 CAA) won their third match and improved to 10-0 at home this season.

"Having a player hit .609 from the right side is unheard of," said Tiger Head Coach Don Metil. "Tori was solid both nights this weekend and I'm glad we had her out on the court. We didn't play well as a team tonight but we had some players do well and heading into another tough stretch we've got to play better as a team than we did tonight.

"The home wins this year have been big, a huge turnaround from last year as we're playing well at home. The fans are giving us some energy and that's big," added Metil. "Our goal is to make the CAA Tournament and we feel despite our two conference losses we were in those matches and when we get them at home the result could be different."
The Tigers and Tribe (5-15, 1-5 CAA) battled early in the first set and found themselves tied at 9-9. Towson scored six of the nine points to take a 15-12 lead and William & Mary called timeout. Senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia had a kill and a pair of service aces during that stretch while Williams contributed a pair of kills. Back-to-back attack errors by the Tribe pushed the Towson lead to 20-16. The Tigers pushed their lead to 23-18 on a kill from Iosia. Towson closed out the first set 25-19 on a ball handling error by the Tribe.

Williams led the Tigers with six kills while Iosia had five kills in the set.

Towson jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the second set on a kill from junior outside hitter Haley Pa'akaula. A kill from redshirt sophomore middle blocker Candace Steadman extended the advantage to 15-12. A kill from sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Flaherty and an attack error by the Tribe gave the home team an 18-14 lead and forced the visitors to call timeout. A block from Flaherty and Williams gave Towson a 20-15 lead in the set. A block and a kill from Carolyn Albright and a kill from Sydney Biniak allowed William & Mary to pull to within one, 22-21. Following a Towson timeout, Biniak had another kill to tie the set at 22-22. However, Towson scored three of the next four points to secure the 25-23 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The Tigers closed out the second set on a service ace from senior libero Paige Sekerak.

Iosia led the Tigers with six kills in the set while Biniak had six kills in the set for the Tribe.

Trailing 10-8 in the third set, the Tigers used a 5-1 run to take a 13-11 lead. Pa'akaula had a pair of kills during that stretch for the Tigers. William & Mary called timeout and after the break Towson scored five straight points to push its lead to 18-11. Williams had a kill while Iosia contributed a service ace. A kill from Williams pushed the Tiger advantage to 22-12. Towson went on to close out the third set 25-13 on a kill from Pa'akaula.

Williams had a pair of blocks to go along with her match-high 15 kills. Iosia posted the "double-double" with 11 kills, 10 digs and four service aces. Redshirt junior setter Aimee Schubert dished out 26 assists while recording six digs. Freshman Barbara Lopez had 17 assists while Sekerak collected 11 digs.
