DEDHAM, Mass. – Despite three defensive saves by the Tigers, the Towson University field hockey team (2-14) could not overcome three first-half goals and fell to No. 18 Northeastern (12-4) on Sunday afternoon.
Megan Boyle and
Emilee Woodall shared goalkeeping responsibilities for the Tigers and combined for 12 saves.
Northeastern's
Marisa Dunn gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead as she scored unassisted in the seventh minute.
Towson held the Huskies scoreless for the next 20 minutes as the Tigers displayed a great defensive effort.
Stacey Mackintosh made two defensive saves as the Huskies were allowed only three shots on goal in that time period. The Tigers allowed Northeastern only one penalty corner opportunity as well in the first half.
In the 29
th minute, Northeastern's
Vanessa Pryor scored two quick goals to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead over Towson. She scored her first goal unassisted before
Emma Lamison helped on her second goal, 12 seconds later.
Towson's
Megan Boyle had three saves as Northeastern outshot the Tigers, 12-0 in the first half.
The second half proved to be scoreless for both teams as the Tigers continued to show off their defensive skills. Towson's
Emilee Woodall, who took over in goal for the second half, made nine saves as Northeastern had 15 second-half shots.
Heather Jenney helped the Tigers halfway through the second half as she made a defensive save in the game's 52
nd minute. Â
Northeastern had six penalty corner opportunities in the second half but was unable to capitalize on any of them.
Sam Zelenack and
Kelly Mattingly had late chances for Towson as they both registered a shot on goal but the Huskies' goalkeeper
Becky Garner recorded saves on both shots. Â
The Tigers return home for the final home game on Friday, Oct. 31 to host the Drexel Dragons at 6 p.m. Towson will honor its three seniors;
Courtney Branco,
Kelsey Fielder and
Kelly Mattingly before the game starts.
