Towson Reaches CAA Tournament with 2-0 Win Over W&M

Story Links

TOWSON, Md. – Two first-half goals from sophomores Natalia Pinkney and Marissa Green propelled Towson women's soccer to a 2-0 win over the visiting William & Mary Tribe and into the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament for the first time in program history.

It was also Towson's (6-8-4, 3-4-2 CAA) first win over the Tribe (11-5-1, 5-4 CAA) in series history.

"I'm really proud of our team today with the efforts they exerted today with their backs against the wall after a slow start in CAA play," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "To be able to clinch a playoff spot on senior day against a big team in our conference…it was just a great accomplishment all the way around. We're proud of all of our players for their work today."

Towson's Pinkney started the scoring at 10:24 when she collected a rebound off a shot from senior Sofia Read and sent a hard left-to-right cross into the back of the net. Towson controlled the lion's share of possession in the first half. That possession paid off at 39:19 when Green headed in the ball on an impossible angle after junior Vasthy Delgado sent in a free kick from nearly 60 yards out. Towson held the 2-0 lead into the break.

The Tribe battled back in the second half, exerting more pressure on Towson and forcing two tough saves out of senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn. However, the Tigers maintained their hold on the game throughout the second half, keeping the ball and making runs deep into the Tribe's defensive end.

Towson outshot William & Mary, who were ranked fourth in the mid-Atlantic region in the NSCAA/Continental Tire poll this week, by a margin of 17-10 and took six corner kicks to the Tribe's three.

The Tigers honored their five seniors in a post-game ceremony, including Morgan Fraczkowski, Katlyn Axenfeld, Read, Katie Ponce and Quinn.

The Tigers will play at No. 3 seed Hofstra in the first round of the CAA Tournament in Hempstead, N.Y. on Sunday, November 2. The game time is TBA.
