HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – In a back-and-forth affair that featured 40 ties and 17 lead changes, Hofstra University emerged with a 3-1 win over the Towson University volleyball team on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Junior
Haley Pa'akaula posted her fifth "double-double" of the year to lead the Tigers (14-3, 1-2 CAA).
The first set saw the two teams battle through 14 ties and five lead changes. The largest lead of the set belong to Hofstra at 11-6 after a Pride (15-2, 3-0 CAA) service ace. For the rest of the set, neither team took a lead of more than two points. The Pride led 22-20 following a kill from
Kelsie Wills. However, a kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman and a block from Steadman and freshman
Barbara Lopez tied it at 22-22. The two teams traded points before a kill from senior
Saitaua Iosia tied the set at 26-26. Hofstra took advantage of a Tiger service error and a block from
Adama Aja and
Hannah Klemm to claim the 28-26 set win.
A kill from Wills helped Hofstra jump out to an 8-3 lead in the second set and forced the Tigers to call timeout. Towson responded with an 8-2 run to take an 11-10 lead in the set. Senior
Victoria Williams contributed a kill and a block assist for the Tigers during that stretch. Trailing 12-11 in the set, Towson scored six of the next eight points and took a 17-14 edge. Iosia had a pair of kills while Steadman contributed a block assist and a kill. The two teams continued to battle as a kill from Pa'akaula put Towson ahead 24-22. A kill from Steadman closed out a 25-23 set win and tied the match at 1-1.
The third set was another battle as the two teams fought through 12 ties and five lead changes. Towson opened up an 8-5 lead on a kill from sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty. The Tigers pushed their advantage to 10-7 on a Pa'akaula kill. However trailing 15-14, Hofstra used a 6-1 run to take a 20-16 advantage.
Brianna Montgomery led the Pride with a pair of kills during that stretch. Towson had a 6-1 run of its own to take back the lead, 22-21. Iosia had a pair of service aces for the Tigers. The two teams continued to battle before an attack error by the Tigers gave Hofstra a 25-23 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Towson opened up a 10-7 lead in the fourth set on a block from Williams and Steadman. The Tigers pushed the lead to 14-7 on a block from Pa'akaula. A kill from Iosia extended the Towson advantage to 20-12. However, a 9-1 run from the home team tied the set at 21-21.
Nuria Lopes da Silva's kill tied the set for the Pride. The two teams traded points before a kill from Williams tied the set at 25-25. A kill from Wills and a block from the Pride gave Hofstra a 27-25 set win and victory in the match.
Pa'akaula's "double-double" was her fifth of the season and second straight. She had 14 kills and 11 digs in the contest. Iosia added 13 kills and four digs while redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert and Lopez each dished out 21 assists.
Senior
Paige Sekerak had a match-high 18 digs for the Tigers. Sekerak enters Sunday's match needing just seven digs to set the school record for career digs.
Wills had a match-high 19 kills to lead Hofstra. Lopes da Silva added 18 kills and five blocks.
Towson returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 5 when it travels to Northeastern for a 1 p.m. match. The Huskies fell to Delaware, 3-1 on Friday night.
