TOWSON, Md. – Senior
Victoria Williams had five of her match-high 21 kills in the fifth set which led the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-2 win over UNC Wilmington on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Tigers won their third straight match as four Tigers contributed double figure kills.
Tied at 7-7 in the first set, the Tigers used a 7-2 run to take a 14-9 lead. Williams had four kills for the Tigers during that stretch. A kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman extended the Towson advantage to 20-14. The two teams traded points before a kill from junior
Haley Pa'akaula gave Towson a 25-20 set win.
Williams record six kills and hit .857 in the set.
The Tigers (26-4, 12-3 CAA) continued their strong momentum in the second set. A service ace from redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert helped Towson grab a 10-4 lead. A kill from Pa'akaula pushed the home team's advantage to 14-6 and UNC Wilmington (19-10, 9-6 CAA) called timeout. Sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty recorded a kill which gave Towson a 19-7 lead. The two teams traded points before a kill from Williams gave Towson a 20-12 advantage. Williams gave Towson a 25-19 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match with her third kill of the set.
Schubert led Towson with eight assists and five digs in the set.
The third set was the tightest of the match as the two teams battled through 12 ties and six lead changes. Tied at 19-19, UNC Wilmington used a 4-0 run to take a 23-19 lead.
Morgan Kline had a service ace for the Seahawks. Back-to-back kills from senior
Saitaua Iosia pulled the Tigers to within two, 24-22. However, UNC Wilmington took advantage of a Tiger attack error to secure a 25-22 set win and forced the match to a fourth set.
Nicole Lott had five kills and seven digs to lead UNC Wilmington in the set.
A kill from
Meredith Peacock helped the Seahawks take a 13-10 lead in the fourth set. Towson cut it to one, 14-13 on a kill from Steadman. However a 4-1 run pushed the UNC Wilmington lead to 18-14.
Leah Gagliardi had a kill and a block during that run. An attack error by UNC Wilmington pulled the Tigers to within two, 21-19. A kill from
Kristen Powell gave UNC Wilmington a 25-19 set win and forced the match to a fifth set.
Powell had three kills and three blocks as the Seahawks recorded eight team blocks in the set.
The two teams traded points in the fifth set as a kill from Gagliardi tied the action at 9-9. A block and a kill from Powell gave the Seahawks an 11-9 edge. Back-to-back kills from freshman
Barbara Lopez. The two squads battled through four ties and found themselves knotted at 15-15. A kill from Williams and a block from Steadman secured the 17-15 set win and victory in the match for the Tigers.
Williams, who had five of her season-high 21 kills in the fifth set, also added five digs and two blocks. Schubert posted a double-double with 39 assists and 19 digs while Iosia also had a double-double with 17 kills and 18 digs. Pa'akaula was the third Tiger with a double-double in the match as she finished with 11 kills and 11 digs. Steadman contributed 11 kills and three digs while senior
Paige Sekerak had 23 digs.
Lott led UNC Wilmington with 16 kills and 20 digs while Powell posted 10 kills and six blocks.
Towson wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 15 when it hosts Elon at 7 p.m. The Tigers will honor their six seniors before the match.
