Astroth Leads Tigers to Victory over CCSU

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Sophomore A.J. Astroth had his best game in a Towson uniform as he scored 14 points to lead the Tigers to a 58-49 victory over Central Connecticut State in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Monmouth.

The Tigers (2-1) won their second-straight game by holding their opponent under 50 points.  It also marked the second-straight season the Tigers have held opponents under 50 points in back-to-back games.  Last season, Towson held The Citadel (11/29) and Abilene Christian (11/30) to 47 points each.

The Blue Devils (0-3) got on the board with a basket 26 seconds into the game.  But, that would be all CCSU would score for the next 6:35.  During that span, the Tigers scored 11-straight points, including the first of two three-pointers from Astroth.

Astroth's second triple helped push the advantage to 20-8 with 9:21 remaining.  The lead would remain in double digits the remainder of the half, and grew to as large as 14 points after a Byron Hawkins layup.

The Tigers held CCSU to just 4-of-21 (.200) shooting in the first half, including missing all five three-point attempts.

The second half saw the Blue Devils make run as they equaled their total number of field goals in the first half in the first 3:43 of the second half.  The run helped close the lead to five points, but Astroth stopped things right there by scoring inside and converting the old-fashioned three-point play.

The Tigers had to withstand one more CCSU run.  Faronte Drakeford drained a three-pointer with 8:47 remaining to cut the Tigers lead to just three points at 40-37.

Towson would regain the momentum as Astroth put back and offensive rebound and Hawkins finished a layup in transition.  That was just the start of an 8-0 run the pushed the game back to double digits.

Four McGlynn helped seal the victory for the second-straight game by hitting all four free-throw attempts in the final 63 seconds.

Timajh Parker-Rivera finished with eight points and nine rebounds, while Alex Gavrilovic added eight points off the bench.

The Tigers took care of the basketball by committing only nine turnovers.  They forced the Blue Devils into 21 turnovers.

The Tigers return to the court tomorrow afternoon as they take on Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m.
