BALTIMORE, Md. – The Towson men's basketball team held UMBC without a field goal for 8:19 in the second half, and went on a 24-7 run over that span to record their sixth-straight victory, 77-66, over the Retrievers Saturday afternoon at the RAC.
UMBC (0-5) pulled with one point on a Malcolm Brent layup with 10:04 remaining in the game. The Tigers would seize control of the game from that point as
Eddie Keith II drove and kicked to
John Davis down low to kickstart the big run.
Mike Morsell rattled off five points, including a triple from the corner, to push the advantage to double figures with 4:00 remaining.
The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the game as
Four McGlynn knocked down all eight free throws in the final four minutes. The junior finished 13-of-13 from the line for a game-high 22 points. As a team, the Tigers went 11-of-13 from the foul line in the final four minutes.
The Tigers (6-1), who were playing their fifth game in nine days, came out quickly as
Alex Gavrilovic made a layup and then followed it with a three-pointer to give Towson the early 7-2 lead.
The Retrievers answered right back with an 11-0 run to take a 13-7 advantage after a Wayne Sparrow layup.
The Tigers battled back to take the lead as McGlynn converted the old-fashioned three-point play with 10:05 left in the first half. The Tigers would push the lead to four points on a
Timajh Parker-Rivera layup. UMBC would come back and tie the game a short time later, and the two teams traded baskets over the next five minutes.
After the score was tied for the sixth time with 2:51 left in the first half, UMBC closed the half on a 5-2 run to take a 36-33 lead into the locker room.
The three-point halftime deficit was quickly erased as Gavrilovic and McGlynn knocked down three-pointers to give Towson a four-point lead and force a timeout 2:48 into the half.
The inside duo of Gavrilovic and Parker-Rivera controlled the inside as they combined for 30 points and 16 rebounds. Each player had 15 points, while Gavrilovic had seven rebounds and Parker-Rivera nine. As a team, the Tigers outrebounded the Retrievers 31-20.
The Tigers return to action Wednesday evening as they play host to Coppin State. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m. at SECU Arena.
