TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore
John Davis scored a career-high 23 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as Towson ran its win streak to seven games with an 84-76 victory over Coppin State Wednesday evening at SECU Arena.
The Tigers (7-1) are off to their best start since they began the 1976-77 season 25-1. The start is also the third-best start in school history.
Towson has now won all four games played this season against schools located in the Baltimore area. Dating back to the beginning of the 2012-13 season, the Tigers are now 8-0 against teams from the state of Maryland.
Davis did most of his damage in the first half by scoring 18 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Davis, the Colonial Athletic Association leader in rebounding, recorded his fourth double-double of the season.
Forward
Alex Gavrilovic added nine points in the first half as Towson took a 38-33 lead into halftime.
The Tigers exploded out of halftime with a 19-6 run to extend their lead to 57-39 just 6:17 into the half.
Timajh Parker-Rivera sparked the run with seven points, while
Byron Hawkins added five points during the run.
Josh Ivory scored on back-to-back layups to give Towson its biggest lead of the game, 75-52, with 5:28 left in the game.
The Eagles (1-5) tried to climb back into the game by hitting three three-pointers in the final five minutes to get the lead until double digits for the first time since early in the second half.
Davis was joined in double figures by Gavrilovic's 14 points and
Mike Morsell's 12. Gavrilovic and Parker-Rivera each pulled down eight rebounds.
The Tigers outrebounded the Eagles 49-32. It marked the fifth-straight game Towson has outrebounded its opponent by double figures.
The Tigers return to the court Sunday afternoon as they take on Georgetown in the BB&T Classic. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. and can be seen live on Fox Sports 1.
