TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team opened up a 30-6 halftime lead en route to a 66-57 exhibition win over Stevenson University on Friday night in SECU Arena.
The two team traded baskets early before the Tigers used a 28-4 run to take a 30-6 lead at the half. Towson shot 31.4% from the field in the first half while holding the Mustangs to a 9.7 field goal percentage. The Tigers also made all eight of their opportunities from the foul line.
Redshirt senior
LaTorri Hines-Allen led all players with nine points and eight rebounds in the first half. Freshman
Breonn Hughey contributed eight points, three assists and three rebounds.
Hines-Allen scored the opening basket of the second half for the Tigers. However, the Mustangs responded by scoring 28 of the next 33 points and cut the Tiger lead to three, 37-34 with 11:43 to play.
Sara Tarbert had 10 points during that stretch while
Kayleigh Guzek contributed 12 points.
A Hines-Allen jumper at 11:22 halted the Stevenson run and jump started a 9-0 run by the Tigers. That scoring spurt pushed the Tiger lead to 12, 46-34 with 9:32 to play. Hines-Allen had six of the Tigers' nine during that stretch. The two teams traded baskets before a pair of free throws from Hughey at 6:43 gave Towson a 52-38 advantage. Kayla Kelly hit one-of-two from the line at 1:28 which made it a 62-55 game. Senior
Camille Alberson and junior
Dominique Johnson combined to go 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 1:30 to secure the 66-57 victory.
Hines-Allen led Towson with 22 points and 15 rebounds while Johnson contributed 15 points and a pair of steals in the win. Hughey had 12 points and eight assists for the Tigers. Senior
Markell Smith had six points and 10 rebounds.
Tarbert led Stevenson with 23 points and seven rebounds while Guzek finished with 15 points.
Towson opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 when it travels to Penn State for the first game of the Preseason WNIT at 12 noon.
