WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Towson University volleyball team battled through 32 ties and 14 lead changes for a 3-1 win at William & Mary on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Tigers (24-4, 10-3 CAA) received double-doubles performances from
Aimee Schubert,
Haley Pa'akaula and
Saitaua Iosia in the win.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the first set. A 3-0 run had the Tribe (6-22, 2-11 CAA) on the verge of a first set victory, 24-22. However the Tigers got back-to-back kills from Pa'akaula and
Victoria Williams which tied the set at 24-24. The two teams traded points and found themselves tied at 26-26 on a kill from
Mallory Brickerd. The Tigers were able to take advantage of a kill from Williams and an attack error by William & Mary to claim the 28-26 set win.
A 10-1 run allowed William & Mary to open up a 14-4 lead in the second set.
Paige Humphrey had a pair of kills during the run. Towson used a 9-2 run to pull to within five, 20-15. Iosia had a pair of service aces during that stretch. Back-to-back attack errors by the Tigers gave the Tribe a 25-18 set win and tied the match at 1-1.
A kill from Iosia gave Towson a 6-3 lead in the third set. The two teams went back-and-forth before the Tigers got a pair of kills from
Lindsay Flaherty to take a 15-14 lead.
Dessi Koleva recorded a kill for William & Mary to tie the set at 18-18. Kills from Iosia and Williams put Towson ahead 23-22. The Tribe tied the set at 23-23 before a Flaherty kill and a Tribe attack error gave Towson a 25-23 set win. Towson took a 2-1 lead in the match after winning the set.
William & Mary led 6-4 in the fourth set before a 5-0 run gave Towson a lead it would not relinquish. Williams recorded a kill on three of the Tigers' five points. The two teams continued to fight for each point before a 5-1 run pushed the Tiger lead to 16-11. Iosia had three kills during that stretch for Towson. A kill from Williams gave Towson a 20-17 lead in the set. A service ace from Pa'akaula closed out a 25-18 Tiger set win and victory in the match.
Iosia posted a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. She also added three service aces for the Tigers. Schubert posted her second straight double-double and sixth of the year with 31 assists and 18 digs. Pa'akaula contributed 11 kills and 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. Williams added 11 kills while
Barbara Lopez dished out 20 assists.
Paige Sekerak finished with 25 digs and six assists.
Koleva led William & Mary with 12 kills and 23 digs while
Gabrielle Pe had 22 assists and 10 digs.
The Tigers play their final road match of the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they travel to James Madison for a 7 p.m. match.
