HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior
Haley Pa'akaula posted her third straight double-double to lead the Towson University volleyball team to a 3-2 win at James Madison on Saturday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers (25-4, 11-3 CAA) won their second straight match and closed out the road portion of their schedule.
James Madison took a 10-8 lead in the first set on a kill from
Kelly Maguire. Towson scored the next four points and took a 12-10 lead. Senior
Victoria Williams had a kill and a block during that stretch. The Dukes went back on top 15-12 after five straight errors by the Tigers. The two teams continued to battle as a kill from redshirt sophomore
Candace Steadman tied the set at 19-19. The two teams fought for each point before a kill from Maguire gave James Madison a 25-21 set win.
Back-to-back kills from senior
Saitaua Iosia helped Towson open up a 10-5 lead in the second set. A kill from Pa'akaula pushed the visitors' advantage to 16-8. A kill from Steadman extended the Tiger lead to 20-11. Towson tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 set win behind a kill from Iosia.
A kill from Pa'akaula gave Towson an 8-2 lead in the third set. Kills from sophomore
Lindsay Flaherty and Williams made it 16-11 in favor of the Tigers. The two teams battled before a kill from Iosia gave Towson a 20-18 lead. Back-to-back service aces from the Tigers closed out a 25-19 win in the third set. Towson took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Towson took a 10-7 lead in the fourth set on a kill from Iosia. A kill from Maguire and a block by the Dukes tied the set at 10-10. A 5-2 run by the Tigers gave Towson a 15-12 lead on kills from Williams and Steadman. James Madison scored five of the next six points and took a 17-16 lead.
Meghan Niski had a kill and a service ace for the Dukes. A service ace from
Sarah Patterson helped the Dukes extend their lead to 23-19. A kill from
Janey Goodman helped James Madison closed out a 25-23 set win and forced the match to a fifth set.
The Tigers got off to a quick start in the fifth set as Pa'akaula's third kill of the set gave the visitors a 9-2 lead. A service error by the Dukes extended the Towson advantage to 13-7. The two teams traded points before a kill from Williams gave Towson a 15-11 set win and victory in the match.
Pa'akaula had 18 kills and 12 digs to lead Towson in the win. Iosia added 17 kills and nine digs while redshirt junior
Aimee Schubert had 42 assists and nine digs. Senior
Paige Sekerak finished with 27 digs in the victory.
Maguire led James Madison with 11 kills and five blocks while Patterson dished out 40 assists.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Nov. 14 when they host UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m.
