Bombs Away! Tigers Defeat Northeastern, 65-61

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team used a school record 12 three-pointers to claim a 65-61 win over Northeastern University on Thursday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Senior guard Ciara Webb led the charge from behind the arc with seven three-pointers and a career-high 27 points in the contest.

In addition redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen recorded the 1,000th point of her career. She has scored 767 points as a Tiger and 1,006 total career points (239 points at Virginia Tech).

"There were so many personal bests tonight," said Towson Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "I think the girls know they can win now. The rest of the season will be like this (close game) and everyone is coming in fighting. We're trying to get position for the CAA tournament. To be able to get a win like this is big and confidence booster for our kids."

The Tigers (8-11, 4-3 CAA) found themselves down early as Amencie Mercier's lay-up at 17:12 gave Northeastern an 8-4. The Huskies (4-13, 1-6 CAA) pushed their lead to 15-8 on a jumper from Kazzidy Stewart at 13:15. The two teams traded three-pointers on each of their next possessions. Hines-Allen recorded the 1,000th point of her career with a jumper at 11:20 of the first half. The teams continued to battle as a lay-up from Samantha DeFreese at 8:23 put Northeastern ahead 28-19. It was the Huskies' largest lead of the game.

Webb drained a triple at 8:43 which started an 11-2 run by the Tigers and tied at the game at 30-30 with 5:12 to go in the half. The senior had eight of the Tigers' 11 points during that stretch. Northeastern went back on top 32-30 before Webb connected on her fourth triple of the half at 4:38. That bucket started a 10-6 run by the Tigers which closed out the half and sent the home team into the break leading 40-38.

Towson shot 41.7% from the field in the first half and connected on seven three-pointers. Northeastern shot 53.6% in the first stanza and made four three-pointers. The Huskies held a 20-19 edge in the rebounding battle at the break. Webb led all scorers with 19 first half points.

Northeastern scored four of the first seven points in the second half and cut the Tiger lead to two, 43-41 with 15:53 to play. However, a three-pointer from junior guard Dominique Johnson at 15:30 pushed the Towson advantage back to five, 46-41. That triple also jump started a 12-5 run by the Tigers which made it a 55-46 game with 10:27 to play. Webb had five of the Tigers' 12 during that stretch while redshirt freshman forward Jordyn Smith's lay-up capped the run. Northeastern got a three-point play which made it a six point game but Johnson connected on another three-pointer which put the home team ahead 58-49. The two teams battled on both ends of the court before Webb hit her seventh three-pointer of the game and the school record 12th of the night at 4:09 and gave Towson a 63-54 advantage. Northeastern scored seven straight points which made it a 63-61 game with 1:06 to play. Stewart had five of the Huskies' seven during that run. Hines-Allen made a jumper with 39 seconds left which gave Towson a 65-61 lead and proved to be the final margin of victory.

Towson shot 32.3% from the field in the second half and 37.3% for the game. The Tigers made 12 three-pointers in the contest. Northeastern shot 17.4% from the field in the second stanza and 37.3% for the game. The Huskies won the rebounding battle, 45-37.

Webb led the Tigers with a strong night across the board. She had a career-high 27 points and her seven three-pointers are tied for the second most in a single-game in school history. Webb added eight rebounds, five assists and three steals with no turnovers in 38 minutes of work.

"My shot was falling tonight and my teammates kept my confidence up," said Webb.

Johnson connected on four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Hines-Allen added 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshmen Shanea Butler and Daijha Thomas each had a season-high six rebounds.

Stewart led Northeastern with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists while Francesca Sally had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Towson is back in action when it travels to UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Jan. 25 for a 2 p.m. game.
