Tigers Drop Heartbreaker to George Washington, 4-3

Lucy Williams
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Towson University women's tennis team narrowly fell to George Washington on Saturday morning by a score of 4-3. The Tigers won three singles points but it was not enough to overcome the Colonials.

"This was a very intense match that could have gone either way," Head Coach Doug Neagle said. "There were a couple of big momentum changes for both teams during the match."

Towson won in the No. 1 doubles spot, Nicole Shakhnazarova and Lucy Williams combining for the 6-1 victory over Allison Hansen and Taylor Nederlander. The Tigers' A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt had a strong match against the ranked No. 10 pairing of Grace Egger and Teodora Radosavljevic but ultimately fell 4-6.

In singles play, Sophie Lesage tried to overcome a 4-6 first set deficit against Radosavljevic in the No. 1 spot, fighting back to win the second second 7-6(3) and push the match to a third set tiebreaker. The late comeback was not enough as she dropped the third set 2-6.

The Tigers would earn the next three singles victories, courtesy of Williams, Shakhnazarova and Gomer. Williams defeated Marie-Louise Decamps 6-3, 6-0. Shakhnazarova won against Nederlander 6-0, 6-2 while Gomer earned a victory over Egle Jakuciunaite 6-3, 6-2.

Barbora Vasilkova dropped her first set against Egger 2-6 before winning the second set 6-2. Egger claimed the victory over Vasilkova however in the third set tiebreaker 6-2.

"This is my sixth year here and we almost beat a tough James Madison team last week, a team that we've never gotten an individual point from," Neagle continued. "Today, we almost beat another sold team that we've struggled against in the past. With each match, this young team is gaining experience and the results will come."

Towson will travel to Salisburg, Md. on Sunday, Feb. 8 to take on University of Maryland Eastern Shore at noon in a neutral site match. The Tigers will then face the host Salisbury University at 3 p.m.
