Fourth-Straight Double Overtime Ends in Draw for Women's Soccer

MT. PLESANT, S.C. – It's become a familiar theme for the Towson women's soccer team this season: play hardnosed soccer, reach overtime. The Tigers played their fourth-straight double overtime game in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play Friday night at College of Charleston, drawing with the Cougars 0-0 after 110 minutes of action.

How it Happened
  • Ìt was a busy first half for Taylor Sebolao in goal for Towson (6-6-4, 0-4-2 CAA). The junior stopper made five saves in the first 45 minutes. Her counterpart, Lauren Killian, made three saves.
  • While College of Charleston (8-7-1, 2-4-1 CAA) out-shot the Tigers 7-4 in the first half, Towson was efficient with its efforts, putting three of the four attempts on frame.
  • Both teams earned two corner kicks in the opening half, while the Cougars were called offsides once in the first half and once in the second, the only two offsides calls all night at the Soccer Stadium at Patriots Point.
  • The two squads opened up their offense in the second half, with the Cougars taking a dozen shots and the Tigers attempting seven in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Sebolao stopped all five goal-ward Cougar shots.
  • Three different Towson players took shots in the first overtime period, with Hollie Garber and Maddie Bove sending their shots over the bar, while Erin Kelly put her try on frame. Kelly's shot was stopped by Killian to extend overtime into the final period of the night.
  • Charleston took two shots in the first overtime, both thwarted by Sebolao.
  • Towson, which played its seventh double overtime game of the season, took two more attempts in the final 10 minutes of the game, with McKenzie McCaull putting her shot on goal. The Cougars ripped off three attempts, but two were high and the third was blocked before reaching the goal.

Behind the Numbers
  • The Tigers played their fourth-straight CAA game in double overtime, going 0-2-2 in that stretch. It was Towson's first tie since a 1-1 draw at Delaware on Oct. 4.
  • Towson logged its seventh overtime game of the year, a new program record for extra-period games. The Tigers have rolled 1559 minutes off the clock in 2015, with senior defender Vasthy Delgado on the field for every minute this season.
  • Junior keeper Taylor Sebolao has six shutouts this season, tying her for fourth in a single year in program history. Towson's seven team shutouts this season rank third all-time for one year in program history, breaking a four-way tie.

Up Next for Towson
  • Towson continues its southern swing on Sunday with a CAA tilt at UNCW.
  • Game time is set for 1 p.m. at UNCW Soccer Stadium against the Seahawks, who are currently tied for second in the CAA standings with 13 points.

Towson Head Coach Greg Paynter
Both teams took long-range shots that weren't threatening. Each side had trouble putting together quality chances because both teams were playing so well.

On Towson keeper Taylor Sebolao and the defense
She's played exceptionally well. We don't give up anything easy. Defensively, Vasthy (Delgado) and Kristyn Hubbard make it tough for teams to get organized. And Nikki and Erin Kelly took their chances when they had them.

On a versatile attacking group
Wer did a really good job attacking the flanks. McKenzie McCaull had her best game this year, and made their keeper make a save in overtime. In the first half we struggled to get our feet and we didn't come out sharp. In the second half and overtime we were much better and sharper.
