Offense Secures Victory with Late Scoring Drive

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Towson offense put together a nine-play 80-yard scoring drive in the final minutes to complete the comeback and hand Stony Brook a 21-14 loss Saturday evening at LaValle Stadium.

"We talked about how this game was going to be and how they had two weeks to prepare," said head coach Rob Ambrose.  "They are a very physical ball club that plays well at home.  We knew we weren't going to win the game in the first quarter and it would take the full 60 minutes.

"To watch our physicality as an offense, and see our defense finish the job, I am really proud of this team.  They have been fighting through a lot and they learned a little bit about themselves today.  They learned about overcoming adversity and they learned about toughness."

How it Happened
  • Towson took over possession on their own 20-yard line with 3:48 remaining after Stony Brook missed a 24-yard field goal.
  • The Tigers started with four-straight running plays before Connor Frazier hit Brian Dowling for eight yards and a first down.
  • After a pass interference penalty moved the ball into Seawolves territory, Frazier hit Jacquille Veii for 17 yards.
  • Darius Victor rumbled for 11 yards on the next play, then scored the game winner with a six-yard touchdown run with 50 seconds remaining.
  • Stony Brook drove into Towson territory, but the game ended when Alfonso Augustine intercepted a pass on the final play.
  • The Seawolves took advantage of a muffed punt and jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
  • After Towson failed on fourth down from its own 25, Max Tejada forced a fumble on the next play and Donnell Lewis scooped up the ball and raced 65 yards for a touchdown.
  • Frazier returned to the lineup to start the second half and led Towson on a 14-play scoring drive.
  • Frazier went 4-for-6 for 44 yards on the drive, including hitting Andre Dessenberg for 18 yards to set up a first-and-goal.
  • On third down, Victor took the loss and lowered his head for a three-yard touchdown run.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Towson defense was dominant all game.  They finished with 13 tackles-for-loss and four sacks.  The 13 TFL's were the mist since recording 15 against New Hampshire in 2009.
  • Donnell Lewis' 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown was the first fumble return for a touchdown since Telvion Clark returned a fumble 32 yards against Richmond on Oct. 26, 2013.
  • Max Tejada led the effort with seven tackles, including two sacks.  Tajada forced the fumble on the sack that allowed Lewis to score.
  • The Tigers allowed Stony Brook to gain 93 yards on their two first-quarter touchdown drives.  The Seawolves managed just 15 yards the rest of the first half.
  • The defense continued its strong play in the third quarter, allowing just 31 yards of offense.
  • Freshman Chris Tedder led the defense with a career-best nine tackles in his first start.
  • Fellow freshman linebacker, Diondre Wallace, also making his first start, finished with eight tackles and a pass break-up.
  • Junior Jordan Mynatt finished the game with 3.5 tackles-for-loss.
  • Darius Victor finished the game with 73 yards and two touchdowns.  He has now scored at least one touchdown in five-straight games.

The Tigers return action next Saturday as they welcome Villanova for Homecoming.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on the American Sports Network.
