TOWSON, Md. – Despite a career-high 18 saves from junior goalkeeper
Megan Boyle, the Towson field hockey team fell to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival No. 19 James Madison 3-1 on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Towson (2-9, 0-1 CAA) got on the board first as senior Stacey Mackintosh scored a penalty corner goal in the fifth minute. Junior Sam Zelenack earned the assist for the Tigers.
- James Madison responded in the 18th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece. Erica Smedberg tallied an unassisted goal off a penalty corner to tie the game for the Dukes.
- The Dukes outshot the Tigers 20-3 in the first half and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Boyle recorded 10 first-half saves while James Madison's Sara Kraeutler only had to make one save.
- Smedberg was credited with a defensive save with under three minutes to play in the first-half, denying Towson's Morgan Skavdahl of a scoring opportunity.
- James Madison added two goals off penalty corner opportunities in the second half to record the 3-1 victory over the Tigers. Loes Stijntjes scored two minutes into the second half with the assist going to Adrienne le Vatte. Vatte also earned the assist on Taylor West's goal for the Dukes in the 48th minute.
- The Dukes finished the game with a 38-6 shot advantage and a 21-4 lead in penalty corner opportunities. Boyle added eight second-half saves for a career-high total of 18. Kraeutler added two saves for a total of four to earn the win.
Towson wraps up a four-game home stand by welcoming CAA foe William & Mary to Johnny Unitas on Sunday. The Tigers and Tribe are set for a 12 p.m. start.
