Tigers Outlast Eagles, 81-77, in OT

BALTIMORE, Md. – Sophomore Byron Hawkins scored a game-high 20 points, and pulled down a key defensive rebound in overtime to help Towson to an 81-77 overtime victory over Coppin State Saturday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex.
 
How it Happened
  • Arnaud Wiliam Adala Moto helped Towson open a 75-71 lead in overtime with back-to-baskets down low.
  • Eddie Keith II pushed the lead to 77-72 with a tip-in off a miss from John Davis.
  • Adala Moto and Hawkins hit four free throws in the final minute to secure the four-point victory for the Tigers.
  • Timajh Parker-Rivera helped to force overtime by blocking the Eagles last second shot in regulation.
  • Coppin State used an 8-0 run to take a 57-50 lead with 11:59 left to play.
  • The Tigers responded with a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 59-57.  Davis scored five points during the run, while Keith II added four.
  • The two teams would stay connected the final 6:30 as neither team was able to open more than a two-point advantage the rest of regulation.
  • CSU tied the game at 69 with a pair of free throws with 54 seconds left in the second half.
  • The Tigers were able to fight off three field goal attempts from the Eagles in the final 10 seconds.
  • Towson got off to a strong start on the offensive end as the Tigers hit 10 of their first 14 shots.
  • The Tigers would open up as large as a 10-point lead in the first half on a Jordan McNeil jumper with 8:44 left in the first half.
  • The Eagles would battle all the way back and take a five-point lead of their own with 2:35 left in the half.
  • Hawkins knocked down a big three pointer and hit three-of-four free throws in the final minute to give Towson the 38-37 halftime lead.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Towson shot 24-of-49 from the field in the game.
  • The Tigers went 31-of-48 from the free throw line.  The 48 free throw attempts are the most in a game this season.
  • The game featured 60 personal fouls, two technical fouls and had 10 players with at least four fouls.
  • Byron Hawkins reached the 20-point plateau for the third time in the last four games with his game-high 20 points.  He added five rebounds, four assists and three steals.  He went 11-of-13 from the foul line.
  • Arnaud William Adala Moto finished with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. 
  • John Davis added 15 points and nine rebounds.
  • Eddie Keith II had six points and six rebounds.  He added two blocks, including a big two-handed block with the Tigers leading by two with three minutes left in regulation.
  • Towson outrebounded CSU 44-28, including 17-11 on the offensive end.  They turned their 17 offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points.
 
The Tigers return to SECU Arena Dec. 2 when they play host to George Mason.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
