Tigers Block Their Way to 3-1 Win at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – The Towson University volleyball team recorded a season-high 12 team blocks in a 3-1 win at Northeastern University on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Six Tigers (24-5, 11-4 CAA) recorded at least one block in the match as redshirt junior Candace Steadman had a season-high seven blocks.

THE BASICS
Towson 3, Northeastern 1
Cabot Center, Boston, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northeastern (6-23, 3-11 CAA) scored the first point of the opening set on a block. Towson responded with a 12-0 run and took an 11-point lead in the set. Freshman Jocelyn Kuilan had four service aces and Steadman added a pair of blocks as they helped the Tigers hold serve for an extended stretch. The two teams traded points before Towson used an 8-1 run to take a 22-5 advantage. Kuilan had three kills during that stretch while sophomore Julymar Otero added a pair of kills. The two teams again traded points before a pair of kills from Kuilan sealed a 25-7 set win.
  • The seven points surrendered by the Tigers in the set were the fewest points given up by the Tigers since they held Robert Morris to six points in 2011. Towson hit .467 in the set as Kuilan led the way with six kills and four service aces.
  • Back-to-back service aces from Kristen Walding helped the Huskies open up an 8-3 lead in the second set. A kill from Brigitte Burcescu extended the Northeastern lead to 14-8. Another kill from Burcescu pushed the Huskies' lead to 19-15. A service ace from freshman Ellie Goodwin pulled Towson to within one, 22-21. Northeastern scored three of the final four points for a 25-22 set win. That set victory allowed the Huskies to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Northeastern hit .212 in the set while holding Towson to a .182 clip. Burcescu had five kills in the set for the Huskies.
  • The third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair as there were eight ties and two lead changes. Northeastern looked to be in control in the set as a block gave the Huskies a 23-18 lead. A kill from senior Kyana Miller on the next play gave started a 4-0 run that pulled the Tigers to within one, 23-22. A kill from Laynie Whitehead had Northeastern one point away from taking the third set and a potential 2-1 lead in the match. However a kill from senior Haley Pa'akaula and a block from junior Lindsay Flaherty and Otero tied the set at 24-24. The two teams traded points before an attack error by the Huskies gave Towson a 29-27 set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Towson hit .224 in the set while Northeastern posted a .222 hitting percentage. Pa'akaula had seven kills in the set while redshirt freshman Anna Holehouse had six digs.
  • Towson jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a block from Steadman and junior Jessica Lewis. The Tigers extended their lead to 7-3 on a block from Steadman and Otero. Northeastern battled back and tied the set at 8-8 on a kill from Jamie Bredahl. Towson used a 4-0 run to take the lead back, 12-8. That scoring spurt was capped by a block from Pa'akaula and Flaherty. A kill from Otero gave Towson a 17-11 advantage and Northeastern was forced to use a timeout. A kill from Flaherty gave Towson a 23-15 advantage. Towson closed out a 25-16 set win on a kill from Kuilan and gave the Tigers a victory in the match.
  • Towson hit .382 in the final set while also recording three blocks. Steadman, Lewis and Kuilan all had three kills in the set while Steadman also had two blocks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson's 12 blocks were a season-high and the most since Towson had 14 blocks against James Madison in the CAA Tournament last season. It was Towson's second match against Northeastern this season with the team posting 10 or more team blocks. The Tigers are 6-0 this season when they record 10 or more team blocks in the match.
  • Steadman's seven blocks were a season-high and one off her career-high.
  • Kuilan led the Tigers with 16 kills, four service aces, five digs and two assists.
  • Pa'akaula posted her team leading 14th double-double of the year with 12 kills and 11 digs. Lewis just missed the double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.
  • Miller had 21 assists and nine digs while Holehouse posted 18 digs.

The Tigers return home to host James Madison on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will honor their four seniors, Pa'akaula, Miller, Aimee Schubert and Sarah Smith before their final home match of the season.
