Tigers Wrap Up Non-Conference Play with 70-47 Win Over UMKC

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team used a balanced attack to claim a 70-47 win over UMKC on Wednesday afternoon in SECU Arena. Four Tigers scored in double figures as Towson snapped a five-game losing streak with the win. Senior guard Dominique Johnson and freshman guard Sianni Martin scored 16 points each to lead Towson.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson got off its quickest start of the season. The Tigers led 9-0 with 7:55 showing on the clock. Martin had five points during that opening run. UMKC responded with a 6-0 run of its own, which made it a 9-6 game with 4:45 to go in the quarter. A lay-up from sophomore guard Breonn Hughey made it a 15-8 game with 2:48 left in the stanza. The two teams traded points over the final two minutes of the quarter and Towson held an 18-14 lead after one.
  • Towson scored 15 of the first 20 points in the second quarter and took a 33-19 lead with 3:31 to go in the stanza. Martin had seven of the Tigers' 15 during that stretch while junior guard Raven Bankston added four points. A lay-up from freshman forward Brittany Tarr extended the Towson advantage to 37-23 with 2:15 showing on the clock. A pair of free throws from Martin with 1:05 left in the quarter sent Towson into the half with a 39-25 lead.
  • Towson shot 47.1% from the field in the first half while UMKC shot 38.5%. The Tigers used a balanced first half attack as eight Tigers scored. Martin led all scorers with 14 first half points while sophomore center Daijha Thomas had six rebounds.
  • A 12-0 run by the Tigers helped the home team open up a 51-28 lead with 5:34 to play in the third quarter. Johnson scored seven straight points for Tigers during that run. That 23 point advantage was Towson's largest lead of the game. The two teams continued to battle and trade baskets. A pair of lay-ups from Bankston helped Towson take a 59-37 lead after three quarters of play.
  • Back-to-back baskets from Johnson gave Towson a 66-44 advantage with 3:02 to play in the game. UMKC scored a three-pointer before Towson used back-to-back baskets from redshirt sophomore forward Jordyn Smith to seal with 70-47 victory.

QUOTABLE
  • "It's a great feeling, that we have good momentum going into Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play," said Towson Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "We talked about getting an identity before going into CAA play and the quicker play will continue. I thought we did a nice job on defense and getting into gaps."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson's 14 point halftime advantage was its largest halftime lead of the year.
  • The 23-point final margin of victory gave Towson it's largest win under Reid Geckeler and largest win as a program since the 2007-08 season when the Tigers beat George Mason by 27.
  • Towson had four Tigers score in double figures for the second time this season. In addition to Johnson and Martin's 16, the Tigers got 11 points from Bankston and 10 from junior forward Brianna Bush.
  • Towson shot 42.9% from the field in the game, in all three of the Tigers' wins this season they have shot 40% or better.
  • Thomas led the Tigers on the boards with seven.

The Tigers are back in action when they open CAA play on Sunday, Jan. 3. Towson travels to Northeastern for a 2 p.m. game.
