Tigers Defeat California University Of Pennsylvania 7-0

Cailey Easdale
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Towson University women's tennis team was impressive on Saturday evening as it defeated California University of Pennsylvania by a score of 7-0.

"This was a great bounce back against a tough #12 in the country NCAA Div. II team," Head Coach Doug Neagle said. "We had some real positives tonight with everyone's effort. We really like the way the girls competed. The doubles point was huge and got us the momentum going."

The Tigers (4-3) started the match strong as they won two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt combined to defeat the Vulcans' Ramona Czakon and Mariela Sarinana 6-4. Barbora Vasilkova and Cailey Easdale partnered for Towson's other doubles victory, besting the Vulcan's pairing of Katie Olson and Alice Johns.

In singles play, three Tigers won their matches in straight sets. That group included Nicole Shakhnazarova, Gomer and Vasilkova. Shakhnazarova defeated Lena Dimmer 6-4, 7-5 while Gomer claimed a victory over Veronika Mikulis 6-4, 6-1. Vasilkova earned the win against Sarinana by a score of 7-5, 6-2.

Sophie Lesage and Lucy Williams both staged impressive comebacks, in the one and two spots. Lesage went down 2-6 in the first set before battling back 6-1 and winning the tiebreaker 6-2 against Kiefer Shaw. Williams fell 4-6 against Czakon in the first set but held on and won 6-4 to force the tiebreaker that she won 6-4.

van Oorschodt tallied the last singles point for the Tigers against Johns. She won the first set 6-3 before dropping the second set 3-6. In the tiebreaker, she defeated Johns 11-9 for the win.

Towson will travel next to Georgetown for a mid-week match on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at noon before visiting George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m.
