Tigers Hit Free Throws to Secure Win over Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Towson made all six of its free throws in the final minute of the game to secure a 53-50 victory over College of Charleston Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (12-15, 5-9 CAA) trailed by one with under a minute to play before John Davis scored down low to give Towson the 47-46 advantage.

A defensive stop resulted in a pair of A.J. Astroth free throws to make the lead three.  Charleston would score quickly and it was Byron Hawkins turn to step to the line and hit two.

Charleston (7-20, 2-12 CAA) scored quickly again and would force two more free throws.  This time, Four McGlynn worked hard to get a catch on the inbounds and calmly stepped to the line to hit two.  Joe Chealey got off a contested three-pointer that was short, and Astroth pulled down his fifth rebound to secure the victory.

Free throws proved to be the difference in the game as Towson went 14-for-20, while the Cougars went just 9-for-21.  Both teams were 19-of-57 from the floor.

Towson opened a five-point lead on a tough Hawkins layup down low just under three minutes into the second half.  Over the next 3:38, the Cougars would go on a 6-0 run and take a one-point lead.  The lead would grow to three on a Canyon Barry layup with 11:48 to play.

Timajh Parker-River would tie the game on the next possession with a three-point play that sparked a 7-0 run and a 40-36 Tigers lead with 8:07 to play.

Towson would push its lead to as many as five points, but the Cougars rallied for a 9-2 run to take their last lead of the game with 2:02 to play.

The final minutes of the game were controlled by the Tigers on the glass.  In the final five minutes, Towson pulled now four offensive rebounds. Towson outscored the Cougars 13-4 on second-chance points.

As a team, the Tigers collected 20 offensive rebounds, and 50 total rebounds.  It marked the sixth time this season Towson has pulled down at least 20 offensive rebounds in a game.

The first half was one of runs for both teams.  Towson used a pair of 11-0 runs, and Charleston used an 8-0 run of their own as the teams went into the locker room with the Tigers leading 27-22.

The opening 20 minutes were controlled inside by the Tigers as Walter Foster and Parker-Rivera combined for 14 points and nine rebounds.

Parker-Rivera was the only Tiger in double figures with 12 points.  He added eight rebounds and three huge blocks.  Foster pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, and Mike Morsell pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds.

The Tigers return to the court Feb. 18 as they welcome Hofstra to SECU Arena.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
