TOWSON, Md. – Towson had one of its best shooting performances of the season, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell, 87-82, to Hofstra Wednesday evening at SECU Arena.
The Tigers (12-16, 5-10 CAA) went 27-of-49 (.551) from the field and 21-of-25 (.840) from the free throw line. It was the best shooting day of the season from the foul line, and the second-best field-goal percentage, bested only by the 57.3% the Tigers shot at Hosftra.
The Pride (18-10, 9-6 CAA) had an answer for the Tigers hot shooting as they went 37-of-42 (.881) from the foul line. Hofstra entered the game shooting 71.5% from the free throw line on the season.
Towson got off to a quick start as freshman
Eddie Keith II scored the game's first eight points, including hitting back-to-back three pointers. He came into tonight with only one three-pointer made on the season. He finished the game with a career-best 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.
The lead would grow to as many as 14 points with 6:37 left in the half, but the Pride ended the half on an 18-7 run to cut the lead to just three at halftime.
Hofstra came out in the second half and went 7-for-10 from the field, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc, in taking a five-point lead with 13:18 to play.
John Davis hit a pair of free throws and Keith II scored down low to bring the Tigers within one.
Four McGlynn, who tied his career-high with 27 points, gave the Tigers back the lead as he pulled up from three in transition. He would hit a pair of free throws two minutes later to give Towson a 68-64 advantage.
The Pride spent the final seven-plus minutes at the foul line. They went 19-of-23 from the charity stripe after the Tigers took a four-point lead.
McGlynn tried to bring the Tigers back as he scored five quick points to make it a two-point game with 29 seconds left. He later drew another foul, hitting the first free throw. He missed the second free throw, but Davis pulled down the offensive rebound and scored.
Hofstra hit two more free throws in the final seconds for the final margin.
Davis was the third Tiger in double figures with 17 points and a team-high six rebounds and two blocks.
The league's top scoring duo, Ameen Tanksley and Juan'ya Green, had 21 points each. They combined to go 24-of-26 from the foul line.
The Tigers return to the court Saturday afternoon as they welcome UNCW to SECU Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
