Tigers Suffer Tough Setback to UNCW

TOWSON, Md. – In a season full of close games, the Towson men's basketball team suffered yet another close defeat, 73-69, Saturday afternoon to CAA-leader UNCW.  For Towson, it was the 11th conference game decided by five points or less.

After a close first half that saw the Seahawks take a four-point lead into the locker room, Towson (12-17, 5-11 CAA) came out strong in the second half as John Davis scored on two-straight possessions to tie the game.

UNCW (16-11, 11-5 CAA) quickly responded with an 11-2 run to open up a 45-36 lead with 11:59 to play.  The run was ended when Four McGlynn hit a deep three pointer and Eddie Keith II scored down low to make it a five-point game.

Addison Spruill, who had a game-high 26 points, hit a pair of free throws with just under seven minutes to play to push the advantage back to seven.

The Tigers made another run as Mike Morsell scored and was fouled.  He missed the foul shot, but Davis pulled down the rebound and scored.  Towson forced a miss on the other end and Byron Hawkins went coast-to-coast for the tough left-handed layup.  With the crowd now into the game, McGlynn took his turn with a tough left-handed drive and gave the Tigers a 56-55 lead with 4:58 left to play.

The Seahawks had yet another answer as Craig Ponder buried a corner three.  Towson was able to tie the game one last time with 2:10 remaining as Morsell scored down low and Keith II hit one-of-two free throws.

Spruill gave the Seahawks the lead for good with a jumper in the paint.  Over the final 39 seconds of the game, UNCW went 10-for-10 from the foul line to hold off the Tigers late.

Morsell led the Tigers with a career-best 19 points.  He was 5-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the foul line.  Davis added 13 points and six rebounds, while McGlynn chipped in 12 points.

The Tigers shot over 50% for the second-straight game as they went 22-of-43 (.512) from the field.  They also went 22-of-28 (.786) from the foul line.

Towson plays its final road game of the regular season Feb. 25 as they travel to face William & Mary.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
