Towson Falls To Georgetown 5-2

ARLINGTON, Va. – Despite two wins in singles play, the Towson University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision against Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon in a neutral site match.

"This was another very close loss for us," Head Coach Doug Neagle said. "We have a tough schedule but it's helping us to get better and prepare for conference play. Today, Cailey Easdale and Barbora Vasilkova played great doubles for us while A.J. Gomer really stepped up in singles. Nicole Shakhnazarova had another great battle and racked up a very solid win against a tough player."

The Tigers (4-4, 0-1 Colonial Athletic Association) recorded wins in singles play by freshmen Gomer and Shakhnazarova. Gomer picked up a solid win against Georgetown's Liselot Koenen 7-6(3), 6-2 in the No. 4 singles spot.

In the No. 3 singles spot, Shakhnazarova won the first set against the Hoyas' Sophia Barnard 6-3 before dropping the second set by a close score of 7-6 (7). Shakhnazarova came out strong in the third set tiebreaker, defeating Barnard 6-3 to earn the win.

The doubles pairing of senior Easdale and freshman Vasilkova picked up the Towson's only win in doubles. The duo defeated Barnard and Daphne de Chatellus 6-4.

Georgetown won the other two doubles matches to secure the doubles point.

Freshman Lucy Williams attempted a comeback at No. 2 singles against Georgetown's Sophie Panarese but it was not enough for a win. Williams dropped the first set 6-3 before battling back to win the second set 6-3 and send the match to a third set tiebreaker. Panarese was able to hold on in the tiebreaker set to defeat Williams by a close score of 7-6 (5).

Towson will look to rebound on Saturday, Feb. 21 when the team travels to George Mason for a 4 p.m. match.
