Unearned Run the Difference in Loss to Marshall

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A two-base throwing error led the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning as Towson fell, 2-1, to Marshall Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The Thundering Herd (3-5) pushed across the winning run as Corey Bird reached on the two-base throwing error to start the eighth.  After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk put runners on the corners, Andrew Dundon delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly to right field.

The Tigers (0-4) stayed in the game as they got strong pitching performances from starter Austin Clark and reliever Matt Golczewski.  In his first start, Clark allowed just one run on four hits and two strikeouts over five innings.  He ran into trouble in the fourth as a hit by pitch, single and an error loaded the bases with one out.  The inning would stop there as Clark induced a 4-6-3 double play.

The momentum from that play carried over for the Tigers as Chris Henze hit the first pitch of the fifth inning over the wall in left field to the game 1-1.

Marshall took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a leadoff double came around to score on a Chad Roberts sacrifice fly to center field.

Golczewski (0-1) was the tough-luck loser as he gave up the unearned run on just one hit over three innings.

"Both of pitchers threw great today," said head coach Mike Gottlieb.  "They were able to throw strikes with two different pitches.  We just weren't able to get our offense to get the victory."

Michael Taylor (1-0) picked up the victory for the Thundering Herd after not allowing a hit over two shutout innings.

Henze led the Tigers by going 2-for-3 with a home run.

The Tigers will return to action at 3 p.m. as they take on Wake Forest.  Towson will send RHP Lee Lawler (1-1, 9.00 ERA) to the mound, while the Demon Deacons will counter with RHP Parker Dunshee (2-0, 0.00 ERA).
