Baseball Falls at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest scored seven runs in the first two innings and that proved to be the difference as the Demon Deacons defeated the Tigers, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The Demon Deacons (5-4) struck quickly as Nate Mondou hit a three-run home run in the first inning.  WF added to the lead in the second on a Mondou RBI single and a two-run double from Will Craig.

Towson starter Lee Lawler (0-1) would settle down after that as he held the Demon Deacons to just one hit the next three innings.  Transfer Thomas Sanchez made his collegiate debut on the mound and tossed three shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.

"You take away two innings and we pitched great today," said head coach Mike Gottlieb.  "Lee didn't get off to a good start, but he got better the more he threw.  It was encouraging to see Sanchez be so effective in his first career outing.

"Offensively, we are in a funk right now.  We just need to get our guys some more at-bats and things will happen.  We will just go back out tomorrow and continue our approach at the plate and hope for better results."

WF starter Parker Dunshee (3-0) kept the Tigers offense silent as he fanned nine, while allowing just one hit over seven shutout innings.

Towson (0-5) collected its first hit of the game in the sixth as Chris Ruszin delivered a one-out single to left field.  Ruszin later walked and was the only Tiger to reach twice in the game.  Danny Caddigan collected the only other hit for Towson with a pinch-hit single through the left side in eighth inning.

The Tigers return to the diamond Saturday morning as they face Marshall for the second time.  First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
