Johnson Leads Tigers to 72-64 Win at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Dominique Johnson scored a game-high 27 points to lead a balanced attack for the Towson University women's basketball team in a 72-64 victory over Northeastern University on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Six of the eight Tigers who appeared in the game scored at least six points.

The two teams battled early and found themselves tied at 9-9 with 15:41 to go in the first half. Senior guard Ciara Webb drained a three-pointer at 15:28 which jumpstarted a 14-4 run by the visitors. That scoring stretch gave the Tigers (10-14, 6-6 CAA) a 23-13 lead with 10:04 to pay in the first half. Webb had five for the Tigers during that stretch. The two teams traded baskets as a jumper from senior forward Camille Alberson at 7:58 extended the Tiger lead to 28-15. Back-to-back three-pointers from freshmen guards Shanea Butler and Breonn Hughey gave Towson a 38-23 lead with 1:24 to go in the half. That was Towson's largest lead of the game. Northeastern scored the final four points of the half as the Tigers took a 38-27 lead to the locker room.

Towson shot 48.5% from the field in the first half and went 6-for-11 from three-point range (54.5%). Northeastern shot 48% from the field in the first stanza but was just 1-for-5 from behind the arc. Towson held a 17-14 edge in the rebounding battle. Butler led the Tigers with nine first half points while Samantha DeFreese had 10 points for Northeastern (4-18, 1-11 CAA).

Northeastern opened the second half on a 5-0 run and cut the Tiger lead to six, 38-32 with 16:28 to play. Towson answered with a 9-0 run of its own which made it a 47-32 game with 14:16 to play. That run featured six straight points from Johnson and a triple from Webb. Northeastern scored seven of the next nine points and made it a 49-39 game with 10:24 showing on the clock. Maureen Taggart had five of the Huskies' seven. A lay-up from freshman center Daijha Thomas at 9:35 gave Towson a 55-41 advantage. The two teams traded baskets as a three-point play from A'lece Mark allowed Northeastern to pull to within seven, 57-50 with 7:20 to play. Towson scored 11 of the next 17 points in the game and took a 68-56 lead with 3:18 to go in the game. Johnson had a pair of three-pointers during that run while redshirt senior forward LaTorri Hines-Allen converted a three-point play. The two squads battled on both ends of the court as another three-point play from Hines-Allen made it a 71-59 game with 1:30 to go. A three-pointer from Kazzidy Stewart pulled Northeastern to within seven, 71-64 with 47 seconds left on the clock. Hughey went 1-for-2 from the line with 30 seconds left which made it a 72-64 final.

Towson shot 40% from the field in the second half and finished the game with a field goal percentage of 44.4%. The Tigers hit four more three-pointers in the game and finished with 10. Northeastern shot 34.3% in the second half and 40% for the game. The Huskies finished the game with a 41-35 edge in the rebounding battle. The Tigers were aggressive in the game scoring 27 points off 19 Northeastern turnovers.

In addition to her 27 points, Johnson added five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Hughey contributed 10 points and nine assists while Hines-Allen had a game-high 14 rebounds and six points. Butler had nine points for the Tigers.

DeFreese led Northeastern with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Taggart added 14 points and six rebounds.

Towson is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 12. The Tigers host James Madison in a special 12 noon start as local school children will be in attendance as part of an education day.
