Tigers Fall To Defending CAA Champions UNC Wilmington

Barbora Vasilkova
LUTHERVILLE, Md. – The Towson University women's tennis team won two singles matches but was not enough as the Tigers fell 5-2 to the defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champions UNC Wilmington (3-5, 1-0 CAA) on Tuesday afternoon. The match was held at the Green Spring Racquet Club close to Towson since the Towson courts were unplayable due to recent inclement weather.

"This was a tough loss to the defending CAA champions," Head Coach Doug Neagle said. "Cailey and Barbora played really sharp doubles for us and Barbora had a great day all around. We're also proud of how hard Sophie fought in the number one spot.

Towson (7-6, 0-2 CAA) had singles victories by freshmen A.J. Gomer and Barbora Vasilkova in the match.

Gomer win came in a close third-set tiebreaker in the No. 4 singles spot. She won the first set 7-6(7) before dropping the second set 6-4 to force the extra set. Gomer held tough to win the tiebreaker against the Seahawks' Alix Theodossiou 6-2.

Vasilkova earned her win in No. 5 singles against UNCW's Hamilton Lovett 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Sophie Lesage had a tough third-set tiebreaker loss in the No. 1 singles spot to the Seahawks' Annika Sillanpaa. Lesage won the close first set 7-6(5) but fell in the second set 6-4 and ultimately in the third-set set 6-3.

Freshman Nicole Shakhnazarova also had a tough third-set tiebreaker loss. She dropped the first set to UNCW's Alyssa Ritchie 6-1 before fighting to win the second set 5-7. She eventually fell in the tiebreaker set 6-2.

The Tigers had a doubles win by the duo of senior Cailey Easdale and Vasilkova. They partnered for an 8-3 win over UNCW's Theodossiou and Christin Kaupper. It was not enough to earn the doubles point as UNCW won the other two doubles matches.

Towson will host conference foe Hofstra on Friday, March 13.
