UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – No. 1 James Madison opened the game on a 18-4 run and posted a 64-49 win over the No. 8 Towson University women's basketball team on Friday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) quarterfinal action. Four Tigers scored in double figures in the game as senior guard
Ciara Webb led the way with a double-double.
James Madison opened the game on an 18-4 run and took the 14-point lead with 14:43 to play in the half.
Angela Mickens had seven early points for the Dukes (27-3). Towson responded with a 15-4 run and cut the deficit to three, 22-19 with 8:31 remaining in the half. Redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen had six points during that run while junior guard
Dominique Johnson had five. Three-pointers from Johnson and Webb pulled the Tigers to within two, 27-25 with 4:02 to play in the half. James Madison scored six of the final nine points in the half and took a 33-28 lead at the break.
James Madison shot 48.1% from the field in the first half while the Tigers shot 29.6%. Each team grabbed 17 first half rebounders. Mickens had nine points at the half while Johnson and Webb each had eight for the Tigers.
James Madison opened the second half on a 10-2 run and took a 43-30 lead with 14:49 to play.
Precious Hall tallied five of the Dukes' points during that run. Towson (11-21) scored six of the game's next eight points and cut the deficit to nine, 45-36 with 11:22 to play. Sophomore forward
Brianna Bush had three points during the run for the Tigers.
James Madison scored seven straight points and pushed its lead to 52-36 with 9:05 left in the game. Towson responded with a 6-0 run of its own which made it a 52-42 game with 6:10. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way. The Dukes' lead fluctuated between 13 and 17 points over the final six minutes as they claimed the 64-49 victory.
James Madison shot 31.4% in the second half and 38.7% for the game. Towson shot 29.6% in the second half and 29.6% for the game. The Dukes held a 39-38 edge in the rebounding battle.
Webb finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. Bush had a career-high 11 points and four rebounds. Hines-Allen and Johnson each had 10 points for the Tigers.
Hall led James Madison with 19 points while Mickens had 10 points, five assists and five rebounds.
