TOWSON, Md. – Towson pounded out a season-high 14 hits, but it was a four-run eighth inning that proved to be the difference as the Tigers fell, 8-4, to NJIT in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. Towson won the first game, 10-8.
Trailing 4-1 heading to the seventh inning, Towson (2-12) got a leadoff home run off the bat of
Peter Bowles.
Brendan Butler followed with a double to right field and
Spencer Sutton singled to put runners on the corners. A double-play groundout allowed Butler to score pull the Tigers within one.
The Highlanders (4-4) came right back in the eighth inning and put up a four spot to push the advantage to 8-3. A fielding error helped start the inning and three-straight RBI hits were followed by a sacrifice fly.
Towson looked to get back into the game in the home-half of the inning as they loaded the bases with no outs. But, a strikeout and a pair of popouts ended the inning without any runs scoring.
The Tigers did not go quietly in the ninth after
Chris Henze and
Richie Blosser delivered back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on the corners. A fielding error allowed Henze to score, before a second-straight error loaded the bases. Towson could not get any closer as a fielder's choice up the middle ended the game.
Ian Bentley (1-2) picked up the victory on the mound for NJIT after allowing two runs, one earned, on nine hits over six innings. Tyler Kapp (4) allowed two runs, one earned, over three innings to pick up the save.
Matt Golczewski (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits over five innings.
Bowles, Butler and Blosser each collected three hits.
Colin Gimblet added two hits.
The Tigers and Highlanders will close out the three-game series Monday at 2 p.m.
