Baseball Drops Tough 6-5 Decision to NJIT

TOWSON, Md. – In a game that went back-and-forth over the final four innings it was NJIT's Mike Rampone who delivered the final blow with a solo home run in the ninth to give the Highlanders the 6-5 victory over Towson in the series finale Monday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

Towson (2-13) jumped out to the early lead in the second inning.  With two runners on, Danny Caddigan singled to right field and looked to have scored Colin Gimblet from second.  On a close play at the plate, the ball popped out of the glove of the catcher.  The umpire ruled the catcher held the ball long enough and called the runner out.  Colin Dyer followed with an RBI single for the 1-0 lead.

The lead grew in the fourth after A.J. Gallo and Brendan Butler delivered back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth inning.

NJIT (5-4) got on the board in the fifth with an unearned run.  The Highlanders took the lead in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double.

The Tigers tied the game in the home-half of the inning as Butler delivered a sacrifice fly to left field.

After NJIT regained the lead in the seventh, Towson came back in the eighth as Caddigan singled up the middle to start the inning.  With two outs, Gallo drove in the runner from second with a single through the right side.

Nick Cioffi had a strong start, but did not factor into the decision.  The junior allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and five strikeouts over five-plus innings.  Austin Clark (0-3) took the loss after giving up one run on three hits over 2.2 innings.

Johnny Malatesta (2-0) picked up the victory after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits over four innings.

The Towson offense collected 14 hits for the second-straight game.  They did a lot of damage with two outs as they finished 7-of-14 at the plate with two outs.

Gallo led the offense by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.  Butler finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Gimblet, Caddigan and Dyer each added two hits.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to face No. 12 Virginia.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
