TOWSON, Md. – Towson scored nine runs in the first six innings and held off a late NJIT charge for a 10-8 victory over the Highlanders in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Brady Policelli got the offense going immediately as he delivered a solo home run to start the bottom of the first inning.
After NJIT (3-4) tied the score, the Tigers got a two-run triple from
Peter Bowles and an RBI double from
Billy Plante to take a 3-1 lead.
Towson (2-11) added a run in the fourth as AJ Gallo singled and stole second before coming around to score on a passed ball.
The Tigers added to the lead fifth after
Brendan Butler beat out a bunt single and
Colin Gimblet walked. Both runners came in to score on a
Richie Blosser two-run double to left center.
The sixth inning saw Towson score two more runs as a pair of errors for the Highlanders plated both unearned runs.
The Highlanders got back into the game in the seventh as an error by the Tigers led to six unearned runs. NJIT added another unearned run in the eighth to pull within one run.
Policelli helped push the advantage back to two in the home-half of the eighth as he drew a walk and stole second. After taking third on a wild pitch, he scored on Butler's sacrifice fly to right center.
Kevin Ross (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after allowing just one run and striking out four over six innings of work. Joe Fasano (2-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over 3.0 innings.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 4 p.m.
