CHARLESTON, S.C. – Towson battled back from an early deficit, but it was a six-run seventh inning that proved to be the difference in a 12-9 loss to College of Charleston in the final game of a three-game series Saturday evening at Patriots Point.
Towson (2-18, 0-3 CAA) got off to a quick start as
Brady Policelli led off the game with a walk. After an
A.J. Gallo single,
Brendan Butler plated Policelli with a single to left center. Gallo later scored as Butler stole second and the catcher threw the ball into center field.
The Cougars (14-6, 3-0 CAA) answered back in the home-half of the first with a five-run inning. Morgan Phillips provided the big blow with a three-run homer. CofC added a run in the third to extend its lead to 6-3.
That is when the Tigers began their comeback. In the fourth,
Mark Grunberg scored a run with a sacrifice fly and
Peter Bowles followed with an RBI single up the middle. Bowles would tie the game in the sixth on his second RBI base hit of the game.
The seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Cougars plated six runs in the frame. A throwing error and a passed ball on a strikeout allowed the final three runs of the inning to score.
Towson tried to make a comeback in the ninth. Gallo and Butler singled to start the inning and
Chris Henze drove in a run with a single up the middle. With one out,
Colin Dyer continued to swing a hot bat with an RBI single to right field. The Tigers scored their third run on an error, but were not able to get any closer.
Bowles led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Gallo added three hits and two runs scored, while Dyer added two hits.
Austin Clark (0-4) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits over 5.1 innings. Eric Bauer (3-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen, tossing three innings, giving up one run on three hits.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to face Delaware State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
