COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior
Olivia Yarbrough had a pair of hits but the Towson University softball team was unable to muster enough offense to defeat James Madison, dropping the series finale to the Dukes, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon at the College Park Softball Complex.
The Dukes (22-6, 3-0 CAA) struck for three runs in the first inning and held on behind the solid pitching of freshman Megan Good, who beat the Tigers (9-10, 0-3 CAA) for the second straight day to improve to 12-0 on the year. The victory extended JMU's winning streak to 13 games.
A day after allowing just one hit through the first six innings of the game against the Dukes, senior pitcher
Missy McCormick wasn't as sharp on Sunday. She gave up five runs (four earned) and five hits in just three innings.
Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, freshman
Brook Miko led off the inning with a triple and scored after sophomore
Holiday Cahill reached on a Dukes fielding error. Cahill scored later in the inning when senior
Macie McGeehan reached on another JMU fielding blunder that made it 5-2.
Â
JMU capped off the scoring in the sixth, utilizing back-to-back extra-base hits with two outs. Sophomore right fielder Tahli Moore knocked a double to left field and Niki Prince followed up with her second double of the day to drive her in and make it 6-2. The Tigers would get no closer.
Freshman pitcher
Megan Dejter was solid in relief for the Tigers, allowing just one run in four innings with four strikeouts.
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday at Villanova. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
