VILLANOVA, Pa. – Behind the strong pitching of freshman
Megan Dejter, the Towson softball team split a doubleheader against Villanova on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers (10-11) won game one 6-2 before falling to the Wildcats (9-14) 1-0 in a rain-shortened game two.
Dejter improved off a solid outing against James Madison this past weekend to lead Towson to a win in game one. She threw seven innings and gave up just one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts.
The Tigers fell behind in the first inning as the Wildcats scored an unearned run. However, freshman
Brook Miko tied the game in the fourth inning with her second home run of the season.
Villanova regained its one-run advantage in the bottom half of the inning. After the first two batters reached, Natalia Segovia came through with a clutch two-out single down the left field line to drive in Dana Morris. Dejter settled down though and got Brittany Husk to pop out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Miko sparked a big inning for the Tigers by leading off with a walk. Two batters later, sophomore
Holiday Cahill belted her second homer of the season over the left center field fence to give Towson a 3-2 lead. Freshman
Kendyl Scott then singled and later came in on a
Tateum Valentine sacrifice fly that put the Tigers up 4-2.
After Dejter retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats made it interesting. Lauren Herschberg singled and Chase Snell walked to get two on with two out, but Dejter got Morris to fly out to right field to end the game.
Junior
Olivia Yarbrough led the Tigers with two hits in the game one victory.
In game two,
Ambar Hickman looked sharp early. The junior did not give up a hit until the fifth inning and finished allowing just two hits while striking out five.
Morris led off the fifth inning for the Wildcats with a double to right field and then came home on a Kaylee Dalgarn sacrifice fly to right field for the only run of the game. The game was called with two down in the bottom of the fifth because of heavy rain. Â
Brette Lawrence threw all five innings for the Wildcats in the win, allowing five hits while walking none and striking out one.
Cahill, Miko, Scott, Hickman and
Daria Edwards recorded hits in game two for the Tigers.
Towson returns to league play this weekend at Hofstra. The conference rivals will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and wrap up the three-game set on Sunday at noon.
