TOWSON, Md. – For second time in as many days, Towson suffered defeat in extra innings as the Tigers fell 4-3 in 11 innings to UNCW Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
UNCW (18-6, 5-0 CAA) designated hitter Joe Bertone delivered the game-winner when he led off the 11
th inning with an opposite field home run to left center.
The game was in extra innings after the Tigers (3-20, 0-5 CAA) tied the game in the eighth inning with the help of a couple Seahawks errors. With runners on the corners, Peter Bolwes stole second. When the throw was high,
Brendan Butler raced home.
The Seahawks got on the board first after Casey Golden drove in a run with a groundout to first.
Towson took the lead in the home-half of the inning as
Colin Dyer singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
A.J. Gallo drove in the second run of the inning with a groundout to first.
UNCW gained the lead back in the seventh on a Chris Mims single up the middle and a Zach Shields infield single into the hole at short.
The Tigers got another strong effort on the mound.
Kevin Ross went the first 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Nick Cioffi (0-1) retired the first seven hitters he faced. He allowed just the one run on two hits and five strikeouts over 4.1 innings.
Jared Gesell (1-0) picked up the victory after tossing 3.1 shutout innings. William Shepley earned his first save after retiring the only he faced for the final out.
Chris Henze led the Tigers with three hits. Bowles and Dyer each added two hits.
The two teams will close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
