PHILADLPHIA, Pa. – Despite a pair of goals from senior attacker
Andi Raymond, the Towson University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 14 Penn by a final score of 12-5 on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.
The Quakers had hat tricks from three players in the contest;
Iris Williamson,
Lely DeSimone and
Tory Bensen.
Penn (8-1) and Towson (4-4) traded goals in the first minutes of the game with
Catherine Dickinson scoring the game's opening goal at 27:22. Raymond tied up the game at 1-1 with 25:32 left in the first half.
The Quakers responded with three-straight goals in six minute including two goals by Williamson. Redshirt sophomore midfielder
Paige Duncan scored the Tigers' second goal on a pass from sophomore midfielder
Samantha Brookhart with 16:12 remaining in the half to cut the lead to 4-2.
Penn scored five unanswered goals in the last 13 minutes of the first half to take a 9-2 lead into halftime. Williamson had a goal and an assist during that stretch.
Penn outshot the Tigers 15-4 in the first half and won nine of the 12 draw controls.
The Tigers and Quakers each scored three goals in the second half. Freshman midfielder
Emily Gillingham opened the scoring with a free position shot with 21:59 remaining in the contest. Redshirt sophomore midfielder
Michelle Gildea scored an unassisted goal with 9:34 left while Raymond recorded her second goal with 4:43 remaining.
Penn narrowly outshot Towson 9-6 in the second half to finish with a 24-10 advantage in shots. The Tigers won five of the seven second half draw controls but Penn finished the contest with an 11-8 edge in the category.
Lucy Ferguson made five saves in goal to earn the win for Penn.
Kelsea Donnelly made eight saves in goal for the Tigers.
Alyssa Saxton appeared in relief action for the Tigers for the final 6:53 of the first half but did not record a save.
The Tigers are back in action when they welcome Loyola to Johnny Unitas Stadium for a mid-week non-conference matchup on Wednesday, April 1 at 7 p.m.
