No. 16 Loyola Defeats Tigers in Battle of Local Rivals

TOWSON, Md. – A 4-0 run to end the first half allowed No. 16 Loyola University to break open a tie game and claim a 15-5 win over the Towson University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday night in Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Redshirt senior attacker Andi Raymond and freshman midfielder Emily Gillingham each scored two goals for the Tigers.

The Tigers and Greyhounds traded goals to start the game and found themselves tied at 1-1 with 23:46 to go in the half. Towson's goal came from senior midfielder Paige Duncan and was assisted by sophomore midfielder Samantha Brookhart.

Loyola (8-4) used a pair of goals just :45 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead with 14:22 to play in the first half. Towson (4-5) battled back and used a pair of goals from Raymond to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:59 showing on the clock. Raymond's first goal was scored on a give-and-go with freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Montalbano. Her second goal came on a shot that was ripped from the top of the circle.

Hannah Schmitt scored at 8:59 and that goal started the crucial 4-0 run by the Greyhounds to close out the half and gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. Schmitt scored her second of the game during that run while Annie Thomas scored her second of the game and Loyola took a 7-3 lead at the half.

Loyola outshot the Tigers 13-8 in the first half while the Tigers won six of the 11 draw controls. Senior Kelsea Donnelly made four first half saves including one on a free position shot.

Gillingham got the Tigers on the board just 51 seconds into the second half. It marked the sixth straight game, the freshman scored a goal in. However, Loyola responded with a 5-0 run and took a 12-4 lead with 10:31 to play. Thomas and Kara Burke each scored twice during the run while Schmitt had a pair of assists. The Tigers had chances during that run as they won seven straight draw controls at one point.

Gillingham briefly halted the run with her second of the game at 9:26. The Greyhounds scored the final three goals of the game for the 15-5 victory.

Loyola outshot the Tigers 10-9 in the second half and finished the game with a 23-17 advantage in that category. Towson won nine of the 11 second half draws and finished the game with a 15-7 edge in that category.

Molly Wolf made nine saves, including six in the second half to claim the win in goal. Donnelly finished with five saves in the loss. Junior Alyssa Saxon played the final 6:03 in goal and did not make a save.

Raymond led the Tigers with two goals and a career-high six draw controls while Gillingham added the two goals.

Thomas led Loyola with four goals and three assists for seven points. Schmitt and Burke each contributed three goals and two assists for the Greyhounds.

Towson returns to action when it resumes Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday, April 3. The Tigers will host CAA newcomer Elon in a 7 p.m. game.
