WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary opened the game on a 12-2 run and claimed a 68-56 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Wednesday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Junior guard
Dominique Johnson led the Tigers with 15 points in the regular season finale.
Marlena Tremba's lay-up at 16:48 allowed the Tribe (15-14, 9-9 CAA) to open the game on a 12-2 run. A 6-2 run by the Tigers made it a 14-8 game with 15:02 to go in the half. Johnson drained a three-pointer for the Tigers during that stretch. The two squads traded baskets before a three-pointer from senior guard
Ciara Webb pulled the Tigers to within four, 21-17 with 11:07 remaining in the half. William & Mary scored 10 of the game's next 11 points and extended its lead to 31-18 with 4:37 showing on the clock. Back-to-back triples from Webb pulled the Tigers to within nine, 33-24 with 2:27 to go in the half. The Tribe scored the final four points of the half and took a 37-24 lead at the break.
William & Mary shot 45.5% from the field in the first half to Towson's 24.1%. The Tribe held a 23-21 edge in the rebounding battle.
Abby Rendle led William & Mary with 10 first half points while Webb had nine for the Tigers.
William & Mary scored eight of the first 14 points in the second half and took a 45-30 lead with 17:03 to play. That was the Tribe's largest lead of the game. A 6-1 run by the Tigers made it a 46-36 game with 14:27 to play. The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court. Senior guard
Markell Smith made one-of-two from the foul line at 10:57 which pulled the Tigers to within nine, 49-40. William & Mary scored eight of the next 10 points and pushed its lead back to 14, 57-43 with 6:52 left on the clock.
Jazmen Boone and
Alexandra Masaquel each had three points during that run. An 11-6 run by the Tigers made it a 63-54 game with 1:28 to play. That run by was capped by a Johnson three-pointer. That was her 67th three-pointer of the season, moving her into a tie for second place on Towson's single-season list. However, that was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way.
Jenna Green went 5-for-6 from the foul line in the final 1:30 which helped William & Mary seal the 68-56 victory.
The Tribe shot 28.6% from the field in the second half and 37.7% for the game. Towson (10-20, 6-11 CAA) shot 41.4% in the second stanza and 32.8% for the game. Towson won the rebounding battle, 44-40.
Johnson finished with 15 points, two assists and three steals to lead the Tigers. Freshman center
Daijha Thomas contributed a season-high 10 points and matched her season-high with six rebounds while adding three blocks. Smith matched her season-high with 11 rebounds and added seven points. Webb had nine points and six rebounds.
Rendle led William & Mary with 18 points and eight rebounds while Boone added 16 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists.
Towson returns to action on Thursday, March 12 as the CAA Tournament begins in Upper Marlboro, Md. The Tigers will be the eighth seed and face number nine College of Charleston at 12 noon.
