Sutton Powers Tigers To 12-11 Victory

Bel Air, Md. – Designated hitter Spencer Sutton drove in five runs, including give Towson the lead in the sixth and eighth innings as the Tigers rallied for a 12-11 victory over Bryant in the first game of a doubleheader Monday morning.

Sutton had his best day of the season by going 4-for-4 with a double, home run and five RBIs.  He was not the only Tiger to have a big day as the top four hitters combined for 10 hits, nine RBIs and nine runs scored.

Brady Policelli was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, Mark Grunberg went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Peter Bowles was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Towson (1-8) trailed by five runs heading to the bottom of the sixth.  Billy Plante started the comeback with an RBI double to right field.  Three batters later, Grunberg went the other way for an RBI single.  Bowles then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field before Sutton delivered a three-run shot to straight-away center field to cap off the six-run inning.

Bryant (1-7) tied the game in the top of the eighth as Matt Albanese singled through the right side with two outs.

The Tigers came right back in the home-half of the inning with a Policelli double to right center to start the frame.  Grunberg and Bowles walked to load the bases before Sutton drove in a run with a single up the middle.  The second run of the inning scored on a wide throw home from the third baseman and Brendan Butler delivered a sacrifice fly to center for the third run.

The Bulldogs got two runs back in the ninth after loading the bases with one out.  A potential game-ending double play was thrown away at first, allowing two runs to score.  Bruce Zimmermann made sure the game would end there as he got a groundout to short for the final out.

Towson got on the board in the third after three-straight RBI doubles from Grunberg, Bowles and Sutton.

Zimmermann (1-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing two unearned runs and striking out three over 1.1 innings.  Logan Lessard (0-1) took the loss in relief after giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits over two innings.

The two teams close out the three-game series with a seven-inning game as the back end of the doubleheader.
