TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team ran its win streak to seven games and improved to 8-0 inside its new home as the Tigers swept a double header from Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium.
Towson (21-16, 4-7 CAA) won the first game 5-0 behind the strong pitching effort of senior
Missy McCormick, who threw all seven innings for her fourth complete game shutout of the year. McCormick and sophomore
Holiday Cahill each drove in four runs to lead the Tigers to a 14-5 game two win.
Freshman
Brook Miko had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-8 with three runs scored and five RBI's. Cahill had three hits in five at-bats while also driving in five runs. McCormick went 2-for-5 including a grand slam in game two, while
Daria Edwards went 3-for-6 on the day and scored three runs.
In game one, McCormick held the Cougars (20-21, 4-7 CAA) to just one hit while striking out five as the senior improved to 10-5 on the year.
Miko ripped her team-high third triple of the year in the first inning to score
Kendyl Scott and then Miko came home on a Cahill single to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Towson added two more runs in the second inning when Miko hit a two RBI single to left field. The Tigers added another run in the fifth and cruised to the 5-0 win.
College of Charleston's
Taylor DuPree broke up McCormick's no-hitter in the top of the sixth inning with an infield bunt single to the shortstop.
In game two, Towson struck early again with three runs in the first, three runs in the second, six runs in the third and a pair of runs in the fourth.
The Tigers plated three runs off just one hit in the first inning while knocking Cougar starting pitcher
Samantha Martin out of the game before she could record three outs. In the second inning, Miko had an RBI single to right and Cahill blasted a two-RBI double to left center to put Towson up 6-0.
CofC would answer in the third with a rally of its own. After back-to-back singles by Victoria Bratcher and DuPree, Mackenzie Maples hit an RBI single for the Cougars first run of the day.
Rebecca Mueller then doubled in DuPree and a Carly Hansis ground out would score Maples to cut the Tiger lead to 6-3.
Towson responded right back in the bottom half of the third by scoring six runs to put the game away. After the leadoff hitter was retired, five straight Tigers reached base. Then with two outs in the frame, McCormick belted her sixth home run of the season, a grand slam that capped the six-run inning and put Towson ahead 12-3.
The Tigers added two more runs in the fourth inning, including a home run from Edwards, and went on to win 14-5 in five innings.
Freshman pitcher
Megan Dejter earned the win in game two, going all five innings while allowing four earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
