TOWSON, Md. – Senior pitcher
Missy McCormick threw her fifth complete game shutout of the year to lead the Towson softball team to an 8-0 win over the College of Charleston at Tiger Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The win gives the Tigers a three-game sweep over the Cougars and runs Towson's winning streak to eight games. The Tigers, who are now 9-0 inside their new stadium, improve to 22-16 on the year and 5-7 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The College of Charleston drops to 20-22 overall and 4-8 in league play.
McCormick gave up just one hit against the Cougars for the second straight day while pitching all five innings, walking nobody and striking out three. The senior, who has won her last six starts, improves to 11-5 on the year. McCormick has given up just two runs in her last 39 innings.
The Towson offense struck early for the third straight game against CofC, plating four runs in the first inning. After an
Olivia Yarbrough leadoff groundout, the next four Tigers reached base with sophomore
Holiday Cahill and McCormick posting RBI singles. Â
Towson increased its lead later in the inning when freshman
Olivia Baltazar came through with a two-out two-RBI single to left that made it 4-0.
The Tigers started tacking on runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Daria Edwards led off the inning with a home run to left, her second straight game with a homer.
Edwards' home run was the first of five straight Towson hits. After Yarbrough and freshman
Kendyl Scott singled, freshman
Brook Miko doubled in Yarbrough. Cahill then smoked a single to left that brought in Scott and Miko to make it 8-0.
Cahill finished the day going 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI's. Scott recorded a hit in all three at-bats and scored twice.
The Tigers will wrap up their nine-game homestand on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Saint Francis. Opening pitch of the first game is set for 3 p.m.
