TOWSON, Md. – Behind the strong pitching efforts of senior
Missy McCormick and freshman
Megan Dejter, the Towson University softball team swept a midweek doubleheader from Saint Francis to push its win streak to 10 games.
Towson improves to 24-16 overall and 11-0 inside Tiger Softball Stadium this season, while Saint Francis drops to 23-11 on the year.
McCormick allowed just one run in seven innings to guide the Tigers to a 4-1 win in game one. Dejter then came on to throw the first complete game shutout of her career to lead Towson to a 3-0 victory in game two. Â
Towson continued its trend of getting on the scoreboard first during game one. After
Shelby Stracher smoked a double to left field in the second inning,
Daria Edwards advanced her to third with a bunt single. Edwards advanced to second and Stracher tallied the first run of the game when the Red Flash first baseman threw the ball away attempting to get Stracher at third.
Three batters later,
Olivia Yarbrough singled to drive in Edwards and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Still trailing 2-0 in the sixth, Saint Francis finally got on the board when Madison Cabell doubled to right center to plate Alexis Bower. The Red Flash run broke a streak of 19 consecutive innings that McCormick hadn't allowed a run.
Towson responded in the bottom half of the inning by scoring twice to increase its lead to 4-1. The big blast in the inning came off the bat off
Olivia Baltazar. The freshman ripped a single down the right field line that scored two Tigers.
McCormick sat the Red Flash down in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win for the Tigers. McCormick threw her seventh straight complete game while improving to 12-5 on the year. The senior gave up just four hits while striking out eight in seven innings of work.
Â
In game two, the Tigers carried over the momentum from the first game into the first inning. After Yarbrough and
Kendyl Scott reached to start the game,
Brook Miko blasted a three-run home run to dead center that landed halfway up the batters eye. It was the fifth home run of the season for the freshman.
Miko's homer proved to be all the offense that Dejter needed. The freshman threw a complete game shutout, giving up just five hits, while walking none and striking out two in the 3-0 win.
Towson returns to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend at UNCW. The first game of the three-game series is set to get underway on Saturday at 12 p.m.
