WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Designated hitter
Chris Henze set a new single-season record as he drove in nine runs in a 20-19, 10-inning victory over Hofstra Sunday afternoon. The victory clinched the series for the Tigers.
The sophomore began his day going in the third inning with a two-run double to right center. He followed that up with a three-run double down the left field line, and a two-run single up the middle in the fifth. He capped his day with a two-run home run to left in the seventh.
The nine RBIs for Henze breaks the old school record of eight set by Steve Farling against Delaware in 1991.
The Tigers looked to have the game all wrapped up, but Hofstra (11-19, 3-9 CAA) had other ideas. The Pride rallied with 13 runs in the bottom of the 9
th inning to force extra innings.
In the top of the 10
th, Towson (9-23-1, 4-8 CAA) got off to a quick start with a
John Drexel single up the middle. Drexel moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch before scoring on a
Colin Dyer double. Dyer scored from third on a groundout from
A.J. Gallo, before
Spencer Sutton and
Thayer Seely followed with RBI singles.
The Pride again did not go quietly as they pushed across three runs and had the winning runs on base.
Bruce Zimmermann made sure the game ended there by getting a strikeout to end the game.
The 20-run outburst marked the second time this season the Tigers scored at least 20 runs in a game. Henze finished 4-for-4 with the nine RBIs and two runs scored.
Peter Bowles added three hits and four runs scored, while Drexel went 2-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored.
Lee Lawler gave the Tigers more than they needed on the mound through seven innings. The right hander allowed just three runs on six hits and four strikeouts over his seven innings of work.
Matt Golczewski (1-3) was credited with the win after getting the final two outs of the ninth inning.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday afternoon as they welcome Coppin State to Schuerholz Park. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
