TOWSON, Md. –
Brittain Altomare scored with 3:08 to play in double overtime to lift Hofstra University to an 8-7 double overtime victory over the Towson University women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers appeared to have the game won off the opening draw of the second overtime period but the goal was waved off due to a rule violation.
"I thought defensively we did an incredible job today," Towson Head Coach
Sonia LaMonica. "
Michelle Dufault was amazing and did a great job guarding Altomare.
Kelsea Donnelly came up with some big saves, defensively it was amazing today. We kept fighting today, it's unfortunate to lose a game like this and hopefully we'll see Hofstra again."
The game was a back-and-forth battle from the start as the two squads fought through six ties in the contest.
Hofstra (9-4, 4-0 CAA) took an early lead on as
Lindsey Alfano scored a man-down goal at 24:30.
The Tigers responded as senior midfielder
Paige Duncan picked up a rebound and fired it home to tie the game at 20:47. Just seven seconds later, Towson took a 2-1 lead as redshirt senior attacker
Andi Raymond won the draw and passed it to streaking sophomore midfielder
Samantha Brookhart for the goal at 20:40. With just seven seconds separating the goals, it was the quickest two goals by the Tigers this season.
Altomare helped the Pride tie the game at 2-2 with a goal at 20:07. However, Towson went back on top as Brookhart's second of the game at 19:47 gave the home team a 3-2 advantage. That was three goals for the Tigers in the span of just a minute.
Hofstra used a 3-0 run over a 3:01 stretch to take a 5-3 lead with 15:50 to go in the first half. Alfano scored her second of the day during that stretch while all three goals were assisted by Altomare.
Towson (7-6, 2-2 CAA) snapped a 10:11 scoreless streak as senior attacker
Sarah Maloof tallied an unassisted goal. The Tigers tied the game at 5-5 as Raymond scored off a pass from freshman midfielder
Emily Gillingham.
Brookhart completed her second hat trick of the season and gave Towson a 6-5 lead with a goal at 4:11. The goal was assisted by Raymond.
Towson carried the 6-5 lead into halftime. The Tigers outshot the Pride 12-7 in the first half while Hofstra won seven of the 12 draw controls.
Hofstra opened the second half with a goal from
Tiana Parrella at 25:58, which tied the game at 6-6. Towson took the lead back, 7-6 as Raymond fired a high pass across the circle to Duncan who fired it home. Alfano's third of the game at 21:57 tied the game at 7-7.
Both teams had their chances in the final 21 minutes of regulation but
Kelsey Gregerson made six saves and Donnelly had a couple of saves and a caused turnover as she picked off a pass.
Both teams took eight shots in the second half while the Pride won three of the four draw controls.
Donnelly came up with three big saves including one on a free position shot in the first overtime period which kept Hofstra off the board and sent the game to a second overtime period.
The Tigers looked to have the game won in the second overtime period as Raymond won the draw and went straight down the field and scored. However a new rule this year forced the goal to be disallowed. The rule says if a goal is scored at the end of an overtime period and the opposing coach asks for a stick check and the stick cannot be located immediately due to the celebration, the goal does not count. The Tigers all dropped their sticks to celebrate the goal and because Raymond's could not be located right away, the goal was waved off.
Play continued and Altomare was awarded the free position shot which she scored on to give Hofstra the 8-7 victory.
Hofstra outshot the Tigers 6-1 in overtime as both team ended the game with 21 shots. Towson won two of the three draw controls in overtime by Hofstra ended the game with an 11-8 edge in that category.
Gregerson made 10 save to earn the win in goal for the Pride. Donnelly finished eight saves in the loss.
Brookhart led the Tigers' offensive attack with three goals while Duncan had two tallies. Raymond finished with a goal and three assists. Dufault had a career-high four caused turnovers in the game.
Alfano led Hofstra with three goals while Altomare had two goals and three assists.
Towson will be back in action when it travels to James Madison on Friday, April 17 for a 5 p.m. game.
