Tigers Head To William & Mary For CAA Championships

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's tennis team travels to William & Mary for the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship which runs April 16-19. The No. 6 seeded Tigers are set to take on No. 3 Elon in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday, April 17 at 12 noon.
 
The host Tribe are the top-seeded team for the conference tournament, followed by College of Charleston and Elon. UNC Wilmington picked up the No. 4 seed while James Madison was seeded fifth. The No. 6 Tigers, seventh-seeded Drexel, eighth-seeded Delaware and ninth-seeded Hofstra round out the competitors.
 
The Tigers finished the regular season with a 12-8 overall record and were 3-2 in CAA play. The Tigers are led in singles play by freshman Nicole Shakhnazarova, who is 18-1 in dual matches. The second team All-CAA honoree has won seven straight and is 4-1 against CAA opponents. Four other Tigers finished with 10+ wins in singles action including sophomore Sophie Lesage (10) and freshmen A.J. Gomer (14), Barbora Vasilkova (12) and Lucy Williams (12).
 
Towson has 32 doubles victories this season during dual matches. Senior Cailey Easdale and Vasilkova have combined for six victories at No. 3 spot.
 
The Tigers will be battling CAA newcomer Elon for the first time on Friday. The Phoenix are 14-7 in the regular season and 2-1 against conference opponents. Last year as a member of the Southern Conference, Elon won the conference title and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to the top overall seed Georgia, 4-0. Five members of the Phoenix team finished the regular season with 10 or more singles wins with a three-way tie for a team-high 12 singles wins (Erica Braschi, Barbora Lazarova and Olivia Lucas).
 
With a win against Elon, the Tigers would advance to the semifinals to play the winner of the No. 2 College of Charleston and No. 7 Drexel matchup. The semifinals would take place on Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. The title match is set for 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 19.
