TOWSON, Md. – Towson starter
Kevin Ross had one of his best outings of his career, but it was not to be as the Tigers fell 13-3 to Elon Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
Ross (1-5) allowed just five hits over eight innings, but it was the last hit he allowed that was the difference. After two intentional walks, Danny Lynch delivered an opposite field grand slam to give the Phoenix the 5-1 lead.
The Tigers (10-25-2, 4-10 CAA) were not without their chances throughout the game as they finished 3-for-26 with runners on base and 3-for-20 with runners in scoring position.
Towson looked to get on the board early in the game as they loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning. A pair of strikeouts and a pop up ended the inning without a run crossing the plate.
Elon (18-18, 10-5 CAA) opened the scoring with a solo home run from Kory Shumate in the third. The Tigers tied the game in the fourth inning as
Richie Blosser tripled to right center and scored on
Chris Henze's single through the left side.
Towson added a run in the seventh as
Mark Grunberg drew a leadoff walk and scored on
A.J. Gallo's double to left center.
The Phoenix broke the game wide open by scoring eight runs in the ninth inning. Towson got one run back in the bottom of the inning as
Colin Gimblet delivered a pinch-hit RBI single down the third base line.
Nick Beaulac (3-1) earned the victory by allowing just one run on two hits and nine strikeouts over five innings.
The two teams close out the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
