TOWSON, Md. – Senior
Missy McCormick and freshman
Megan Dejter combined to allow just one run in two games as the Towson softball team swept a doubleheader from Mount St. Mary's at Tiger Softball Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers improve to 33-19 overall and complete their home season with a 17-1 record inside the newly renovated Tiger Softball Stadium.
McCormick allowed just one hit in five innings while throwing her single-season school-record eighth complete game shutout of the year in game one. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Tigers to an 8-0 five-inning win.
Dejter retired 16 straight batters at one point in the middle of her game two gem. The freshman allowed just one run on three hits in a 6-1 Towson victory. Sophomore
Holiday Cahill belted her 13
th home run of the season in game two, setting the Tiger single-season home run record in the process.
McCormick and freshman
Olivia Baltazar paced the Towson offense with four hits and three RBIs each in the two games. Sophomore
Tateum Valentine scored three runs in the sweep.
The Tigers scored in each of the five innings of game one, putting up multiple runs in both the third and fifth frame.
McCormick drove in junior
Olivia Yarbrough with a double in the first and Valentine doubled and scored on a passed ball in the second to give Towson an early 2-0 lead.
McCormick smacked her second double of the game to spark a three-run Tiger third. Freshman
Shelby Stracher brought in McCormick with a sacrifice fly and later in the inning, Baltazar drove in a pair of runs with a double to right center.
Leading 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Towson closed the game with a pair of runs. Freshman
Daria Edwards led off the inning with a walk and came in on an error to score the first run of the inning. Valentine, who singled earlier in the frame, then scored on a
Kendyl Scott single to center field.
Towson broke open game two in the bottom of the third inning. Leading 1-0, Scott and McCormick led off the frame with back-to-back home runs to left field that sparked a three-run inning. Stracher doubled in Cahill later in the third to increase the Tiger lead to 4-0.
Cahill homered in the fifth and Yarbrough tripled in pinch runner
Dylan Jarvis in the sixth to provide Towson a pair of late insurance runs. Dejter had her string of retiring 16 straight batters end with two outs in the seventh when Niki Gonzalez homered for Mount St. Mary's only run in the two games. Â
The Tigers wrap up regular season play on Friday and Saturday at Delaware. The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rivals will play a doubleheader on Friday and wrap-up the three-game series on Saturday. Start time for both days is 1 p.m.
