ELON, N.C. – Sophomore
Holiday Cahill belted a first inning grand slam and the Towson softball team didn't look back, defeating Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe Elon, 7-1, to win the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon.
Cahill's first inning grand slam was one of two home runs on the day for the sophomore, who leads the Tigers with seven homers on the year. Her big first inning blast proved to be all all the offense that senior pitcher
Missy McCormick needed. For the second consecutive day, McCormick dominated the Phoenix hitters. The senior threw all seven innings, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out five.
Towson added to its lead in the second inning when freshman
Brook Miko doubled in junior
Olivia Yarbrough to give the Tigers a 5-0 advantage.
Elon finally got to McCormick in the bottom of the fifth. Still trailing by five runs, Phoenix pinch hitter Aly Quintana hit a leadoff single to right center. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Alaina Hall drove her in with a one-out single that found a hole on the left side of the infield.
The Tigers pulled away though in the top of the seventh when freshman
Shelby Stracher and Cahill smacked back-to-back home runs to give the road team a 7-1 advantage. McCormick set down the Phoenix in order in the bottom half of the frame to earn her eighth win of the year in a complete-game performance.Â
Cahill finished the day going 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Yarbrough and Miko continued their hot hitting, collecting two hits each for the Tigers.
By winning two of three against the Phoenix, the Tigers improve to 15-16 overall and 2-7 in CAA play. Elon drops to 23-12 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Towson returns home on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Delaware State. Game one is set to get underway at 2:30 p.m.
